4th gen to 6th gen

looking to buy a new 2018 camaro 6th gen 1ss camaro how does the handling feel compared to the 4th gen.

HCI2000SS 12-25-2017 12:44 AM

I drove a 6th gen V6 and even that handled 10 times better than my 4th gen SS

BizZzatch350 12-26-2017 04:06 AM

Only one I've driven was a V6 as well, thing was quick and handled/stopped really well. I don't think you would be disappointed by one.

Not even on the same planet stock vs stock. However you can make a 4th gen handle pretty good if you sink some good coin into suspension and shocks. My 2002 1SC took second place at tire racks scca race 2 years in a row with the previous owner. He had koni shocks, adjustable A-arms...etc.

I have both, no comparison...night and day different car.

Drove a 2016 1SS A8 today. Impressed as hell. Loved everything about it.

sscamaroburn02 03-16-2018 07:47 PM

A lot of years in between. Technology has improved I still like the way a 4th gen rides. I like feeling the road with upgraded full suspension it's no slouch.

MuhThugga 03-26-2018 10:27 AM

The 6th Gen's handling is far superior than the 4th Gen's.

The 4th Gen's visibility is far superior than the 6th Gen's.

Yep...which is why ended up buying one. I was set on buying a C6 Vette but the 6gen Camaro is just better all around.

Hands down the 6th gen Camaro is better than the 6th gen Vette. Just the interior quality and technology inside the car is worth it alone.

I've so lost track of this thread.

I now currently own both a 2017 2SS and a 99 Z28. They are just altogether different cars infact its difficult to compare them..but obviously stock performance the 6th Gen wins...easily. Infact its night and day. My LS1 was more comparable to my previous 6th Gen 1LT V6 in terms of power than it is the 6th Gen SS.. HOWEVER that doesnt necessarily mean the 4th Gen is trumped... The 6th Gen drives heavy and the 4th Gen drives lighter.. supposedly the 6th Gen handles better but I find my 99 Z28 to be more maneuverable. All out acceleration? My Z28 surprisingly held on to a base C6 on the highway up till about 100. I he was driving a manual and I don't know if it was a drivers error on his part or not but I was quite surprised by this as I was expecting to get slaughtered. (I only have a ported throttle body and LID on the 4th Gen ontop of a lvl 6 FLT 4L60E. ) The 4th Gen's acceleration makes you feel it and lets you know its there...its raw...the 6th Gen will make you feel like you're doing 45 MPH at 90 MPH (not kidding, it dampens its sense of speed insanely.).. But... its very difficult (I mean it takes conscious effort) to keep the 6th Gen below 100 MPH.. ..and its a very noticable difference in power between them in STOCK form - With money, any car can be fast...but I have to admit OUT THE BOX, the 6th Gen is hard to beat and comes with a very durable drivetrain which isn't present STOCK in the 4th Gen, you have to upgrade the trans and rear end if you want to lay down serious power, likewise the motor if you want to throw in boost (boosting probably holds true for the 6th Gen too though.)

In a sense though..when I think of a Camaro, I think of my 4th Gen... I constantly just refer to my 6th Gen as an "SS" - not a Camaro.

When it comes to modding though, I'm still going to mod my 4th Gen. I just feel it will be a much more fun sports car given its feedback, aggressiveness and all out rawness... Plus I dont want to trash my warranty.

As a former 4th gen owner these cars aren't even in the same time zone. Literally the only thing my old 4thgen did better was overall visibility. After a few hundred miles it's a nonfactor as you get used to it.

vtirocz 06-10-2018 05:24 PM

I had a '00 Z28 (with 1LE springs/swaybars and Koni SA shocks) for 12 years and now have a '17 1SS for a little over a year. The Alpha chassis and independent rear suspension make a huge difference. I have the base (non-MRC, non-1LE) suspension and during any spirited driving you can tell they spent a ton of time dialing in the chassis. It's never harsh, has excellent shock damping, and can handle mid-corner bumps much better than the live axle equipped 4th gen ever could. Overall, the limits are significantly higher and it's easier to drive fast.

I agree that the visibility was better with the 4th gen (particularly when looking over my right shoulder) -- properly adjusted mirrors and a <$10 blind spot mirror make this a non-issue, but it should be better. I think the SLP dual dual (aftermarket version) on my 4th gen also sounded as good (possibly even better) than the NPP exhaust on my '17.. the SLP dual dual sounded really good in my opinion. I also think the 4th gen throttle response was maybe a little bit better. Lastly, the rear seat space was a bit better on the 4th gen, which is important to me as I have two young kids that need to use them occasionally.

Overall, the 6th gen is a huge improvement over the 4th gen in every way. If you like the 4th gen, you will REALLY LIKE the 6th gen. I consider the 1SS to be a really good deal. I bought mine for around 18% off with deals going on at the time back in March 2017, so brought the price (before TT&L) down to $32k. No other new car can touch the 6th gen Camaro at that price point.

Hope this helps!

The 6th gen must be a huge improvement over a 5th gen, I've been in a 2012 SS and it didn't feel stronger, sure handled better though.
The driving experience is more enjoyable and analog with the 4th gen, much more satisfying.

And the 6th gen looks?
It's a very nice car and WAY nicer then my old beater for sure, but I do not like the looks.

Gee, thanks! ;)

I posted in another thread, but figured I'd ask here as well - does anyone feel like some of the build quality of the new ones is a bit... cheap? I got a 2018 SS as a rental with only 4000 miles on it, and the doors feel light and flimsy, and rattle more than my '97. The trunk space is better but the opening is tiny, and somehow they managed to make the backseats even more useless.

Yeah, it's a rocketship, and handles well, but I think I would have been upset if I paid $40k+ for rattling doors and flimsy feel. I was a little disappointed, to be honest. This was the first Camaro newer than a 4th gen I've ever driven.

Mark IXZD 150 06-23-2018 06:58 AM

My 2017 1LE makes my 2000 SS feel like a Model T. Ok, that's an exaggeration but seriously... no comparison.

Roarin_8 06-24-2018 08:21 AM

I'm also thinking of going to the 6th gen. I'm still preapproved through Capital One since a different bank picked up the financing for my girl's car. I'm going to wait till after the depreciation hit though. A 6th gen with the stalled auto and nice drags will be a very quick ride.

solobaric 08-09-2018 04:13 AM

Just repeating what everyone else has said, the difference between my 02 and my 16 is night and day. Not even really something that you can describe.

Chocolate Apocalypse 08-09-2018 03:10 PM

Now I love 4th gens, sitting in one feels like home, but I just picked up an '18 SS 1LE and there is no comparison. Even with Koni shocks, Strano springs and sways and an MCW Watts linkage I can find the handling limit pretty easily if I want to. The 6th gen, not so much, it's so composed I feel like even when pushed I'm nowhere even close to the limit...and I'm cool with that lol
