I'm going to try seafoaming and the 0w-30 Castrol and hope that turns off diesel mode.

I agree.

My '02 slaps pretty good, but it's nothing that you can hear behind closed doors. Or once the engine is fully warm. Not anywhere near bad enough to consider selling it for that reason.

Something must've been seriously wrong with your shortblock. Or you have bionic hearing.

I do have pretty good hearing btw ..It started around 50k miles with the "normal" slap when it was cold and it would go away. Then around 70k it seemed like it got louder and whats weird sometimes it would go away when warm and sometimes it wouldnt.I do agree something was going on in the motor, then i found another on that i drove all of the way up to 100k with just the normal ls1 slap noise.(before i crashed it)

Definitely more than an annoyance there

I have been thinking about buying a trans am or an ss, but how could GM let two models off the line with pistons that aren't sized properly for the block?

I mean there are areas on a car I expect corners to be cut, but the engine??/

How much is it to "fix" the problem? Does it mean you have to get a re-machine of the block and match the pistons for the correct diameter of each cylinder?

Haha! The bright side was I guess you got a bada$$ stroker out of it

Vicinity... having a 5.3 for 5+ years with piston slap yours definitely sounds like something else to me. I won't even speculate cause you can't really tell where on the motor the noise is coming from but it doesn't sound like mine at all. Plus almost all piston slap motors stop knocking when they warm up. That is why it is often referred to as CSK or cold start knock. There is a TON information on it on the 99-up truck forums over at chevytalk.com if you want to do some reading up and maybe get a sound clip. Just search it under CSK.

Good luck figuring it out man

Ehh... now I got a severe rocking from the engine or tranny at idle. This car is slowly pissing me off.

I think I'm going to swap out the engine next year. This one just sounds worse everytime I get out and listen... What noise does it make if it's going to throw a rod or whatever?

Does anyone know if the LS6 gets piston slap (or if it's been known too)?

This kind of nonsense cracks me up. Stop buying into all the stuff you are reading and hearing on the net, in forums like this and others.

If these motors were flawed with this detrimental "piston slap" they would not have lasted thousands of miles on thousands of cars. You could line up 10 people to listen to something and get ten different opinions.

My own car has been started up and beat on so many times and yet still comes back begging for more.

The real story behind these engines is they are the begining of GM's engine of the next couple of decades. The head design, block, roller lifters rockers, simple push rods and on and on.

People like you in the "used car market" have to shop wisely period. Look for engines that have not been over raced and under maintained. Solid cars with some life left in them.

You will miss out on the best bang for your buck ride made in a long time if you pass on the LS1!

^^ Whatever sound my engine has, makes no difference on performance, if I smash the pedal, I roast the tires. It doesn't matter what sound comes out, these engines will move the car.

I'm just picky about noise.
