Call me ignorant but I have no idea what that is. Is that similar to piston slap when its cold? I know my car is a little noisy on a cold start but it mostly goes away when its warm

all ls1s have valve train noise, if it is very quiet and youhave to really listen for it, then it isnt a big deal..

if it is loud, it could be a few things.. usually its a lifter.. sometimes its a pushrod, just depends on the problem..

like a bent pushrod? it seems to purr from the top...could be a bad tensioner i was thinking also....how hard would it be to replace? he seems to think its made the noise the whole year hes had it, and never had a real problem. he also said the oil temp is reading ever so slightly higher

no, you should hear a pushrod on top... usually a problem you have uptop (ie. pushrod, spring, lifter) is no big deal.. in the bottom though (ie. rods, pistons, etc.) is where you have a big deal..

hmm....well is there a way to tell whether or not the noise is a piston/rod or just something rattling? the car seems to be running fine he says....

not that i know of.. you could do the old stick to the block trick..

someone else might chime in and let you know..

you could pull the covers in no time and check the pushrods/springs/lifters..

Im not expert but both my vehicles have exhaust leaks. Is it a ticking noise from the bottom? Does it get faster when he revs it up? Just a thought, good luck.

he has longtubes with a full catback, but the exhaust is supposedly welded pretty well. its from the bottom, and i dont think it gets faster but i could be wrong.

If it was an exhaust leak it would probably be at the head like a bad gasket or loose header or something, not the catback.

I'm leaning towards noisy valves because of the longtubes....thoughts?

I would check for an exhaust leak since it's the easiest and most obvious to find, then go from there if thats not it. Honestly though if it's not too loud I wouldn't worry about it, both of my LS1's have been a little noisy and both ran/runs strong as hell

Once you add long tube headers the valve train noise is a little louder on our cars, its not a big deal as long as your car is running fine. Tell your buddy to be careful and let it warm up next time. Just me 2 cents
