Default C6 Z06 cam. Worth it? Or not?

I have a buddy who wants to cam his 98 Z28. He said he's going with a Z06 cam. I told him it would be better to get a cam from comp cams or something a long those lines. Will the Z06 came net him the same gains as an off the shelf cam? I was just curious if the Z06 cam was like the LT4 hot cam everyone says to avoid?

Im pretty sure a Z06 cam is the same as an LS6 cam. It give a little better power range and if hes looking to keep it more stocklike it wouldnt be a horrible idea if hes getting a good deal on it, but like you said he would probable see a bigger gain with ah off the shelf cam.

A C6 Z06 cam is bigger than a LS-6 cam.Remember the LS-6 cam is from a C5 Z06 w/a 346 ci and the C6 Z06 is a 427 ci and i think it is 575/575 in the C6 and 551/551 in the C5.A C5 Z06 cam would work great and it is not like the GM hot cam for the LT-1 but the LS-1 GM hot cam has the same lift as the LT-1 hot cam 525/525

I don't think it is worth the trouble to swap unless unless you go to something in the 224 range......

There is absolutely no point in putting in the Z06 cam in for the work involved. Get a 224/224 minimum.

he might just be getting that cam because its a "Z06" cam, not because of the performance value. tell him to go aftermarket with a good grind.

Another thing to remember is tell him to ask himself what are HIS goals for the car? If he can answer that it will tell him if its worth it. Another example is headers, alot of people on here will say that dont bother with headers unless there LT's. While for some people and the goals they want to achieve with their cars they go with shorties. Not everyone is trying to have a 10 second street car.

I say get him a 228r or a g5x4 or x3 cam. More power and torque

The work to put a C6 in an older Gen III negates any value you might see from picking up a low buck C6 Z06 cam. You'd be money ahead having the cam copied onto a Gen III cam instead of the added expense of converting it over to use the GenIV style cam sensor, etc...

Thanks for all the info guys. I'll show him this thread and see if he still wants that cam. He seems to think the cam will work better with the supercharger he plans on adding in the future.

If he wants to do a S/C then why not get a cam that is specifically ground for a S/C application? That is the best way to waste money with cars is just doing mods to do them and not planning out your final build.

Pass on the ZO6, not worth the time and effort even if it was free. Is he going S/C within the year or 4 years down the road? That will make a big difference in cam selection. TSP228r if he's not S/C any time soon, good usable power everywhere and he can seel it later if he does go S/C.
