They're going to run out of numbers soon...

Although, the LS-series has been going for almost 15 years now. Wouldn't surprise me to see GM doing some R&D on smaller-displacement, DOHC engines. We're seeing a push for high-power, retro-styled large cars now, but within the next 5-10 years, micro-commuters and lunchbox cars (like the Aveo, Soul, and Cube) are going to become increasingly popular.

To be painfully blunt, it wouldn't surprise me to see the majority of V8 engines phased out over the next 20 years.

There are already "LS" based engines that don't use "LS" in the RPO. It's been this way for a while now, if that's what you were referring to.

There is talk of the next phase being an LS5 with 5.5L and direct injection. There is a thread about this in the Auto News section.

GM just invested something like $800 million in small block tech so what you heard is definitely wrong.

False, even though i'm not sure if I like where it's going. It's just my opinion tho, i've always been pushrods over OHC and i've always believed in no replacement for displacement, so the bigger the cubes the better.

I agree 100% on the displacement thing. I've been saying for a while now that I was disappointed to see the potential LS5 debut as a 5.5L rather than 6.3 or larger (it shouldn't be smaller than the LS3, IMO). Cubes are good, espeically for a stock street motor that sees more time at low rpms than at WOT.

I also agree with you 100% on pushrods vs OHC, however, the LS5 will still be an OHV/pushrod engine, just with direct injection.

the reason the ls platform exists now is because it beat out the s/dohc platform back in its early development stages in the early to mid 90s. for the use in future of v8 production motors in GM vehicles.

i would prefer to see smaller displacement such as all aluminum 4.8 ls with DI and possibly even a twin scroll turbocharger or pair of them. all the tech and hardware alredy exists at gm.
some 4cyl gm cars alredy use di and turbo. and get excellent mpg and power. whats to stop them from r&d on a ls based v8 version.

i hope the ls doens t go away too soon. if it does i will prolly be done with gm vehicles. every vehicle i own is a ls v8. if i want 4cyl. i will buy one. but i wont give up my ls v8s. not yet.

i remember reading and hearing 30 yrs ago v8s were going to be gone. didnt happen then and wont happen now. theyre more efficent and emissions compliant than ever.

what needs to happen is vehicles need to get lighter and maybe even smaller in some cases.

they were alot of things actually. high gas prices and shortages. increasing emission, mileage and safety standards. automakers were able to overcome this and musclecars survived.

and as long as theres a demand theyll continue to be around.

ha gm doesnt waste molds and forms, they will run the ls til the molds are worn out beyond repair, the they ran the sbc from 55-03, like they would quit with a highly invested engine so soon.
