Curious rpm / gear question
So I've been wondering about this for a long time, finally i decided to ask.
I have a 98 A4 z28, the fourth gear kicks in @ approx 37 mph, I keep my foot on the throttle at the same position, then @ approx 48mph the rpm drops again as if a fifth gear has dropped in, what's the story / mechanism behind this?
Thanks

the same thing here,
i believe your car is Japan's specs. you can see that from the fender indicator lights and the side mirrors.
i like that 5th shift or what ever it is, cruising at 60 miles doing 1600 RPM

No because your convertor will keep itself unlocked till you hit 45mph. And anytime your cruising around and your speed drops below 45mph it will unlock itself. The only exception to this rule would be if you had a manual valve body in your 4L60E. And you don't!
