Patriot Springs...... Stay away!!!!!
So, I installed patriot gold double springs in my Firehawk when I did my cam swap a couple years ago. The guys at Thunder Racing told me I should change my springs due to the miles I had on them ( 15,000). So I tore down the motor and changed my springs to the Comp 926's. while I was at the shop, Mike (tuner at TR) was doing the same thing. He pulled his cam to change it out when he found that the last exhaust lope was beat up pretty bad due to valve float ( he only had 12,000 miles on GTO w/ RapTR cam). I decided to check my cam as well just for good measure and sure enough... my cam was in pretty bad shape as well due to the same reason.
If you are running patriot springs you may want to look into changeing them ASAP. I have about a dozen friends that are finding the same thing has happened to them.
When my new cam comes in I will post pics of the lopes from the ruined cam.

It's a mild lift cam (.575) and TR gave me patriot dual extreme springs as their regular patriot dual golds were out of stock.
Even with the more heavy duty spring on my mild cam application I'm at risk? Any other threads/concerns on this topic besides the one?

I just know of me and some other guys running .615+ lift running into issues at around 12k-15k miles. This is a kinda new development with the patriots. My car is just a play toy and it ran fine. I didn't know about any of this till me and a guy at Thunder tore our motors down. For the amount of miles you have, you should be just fine for a while but once you start getting around the 10k-12k mark you may want to check into it some more

So how you know if they wore out by checking the closed pressure and open pressure. If the number is lower then the spec for the spring are they bad. Example 135 closed 375 open if the test number is lower then the spec are they bad?

That is just the opposite of my experience with Patriot gold dual springs...I have put 50,000 miles on three diffferent set of those springs before I changed them...the car is a dailey driver and makes 452/418 @ the wheels....I have had very good results over the years with those springs....but my lift is not .600 +

Patriot has R&D their springs, they even renamed them. I wonder how better they are than the older design.

The all new PRC .650" spring kit is the newly updated replacement to the old "gold, Platinum or xtreme" valve spring that has been around for years & years. The increasingly more aggressive lobes that companies are putting in LS engines was starting to compromise the long term dependability of these older valve spring designs. In testing we were seeing severe spring pressure and height losses with some lobe designs. Even though many companies still sell these old spring designs, it was extremely obvious that PRC needed to completely redesign their flagship valve spring. The result is the all-new PRC .650" double spring kit that offers over 2 times the life of the "gold, platinum or xtreme" valve springs & resists pressure drops after large numbers of cycles. By using the best possible materials and carefully tuning both the inner and outer springs frequencies, PRC has made a valve spring that is more stable at resisting harmful harmonics that can lead to failures.

Just an idea? If its always the last lobe on all the cams, could it be an oil issue? Or can you tell its worn from valve float? Im not saying the springs are perfect. Just saying maybe something else is causing it. I know the newer oils dont have all the best protection.
Just doing some reading because I want to install a 5.3 or 6.0 in a 73 firebird. Cant decide which one to go with. Want cruising mileage. But want turbo or SC for the power when I need it.
