Question I need to get some keys made...Must I get raped by the dealership?

Hey guys,

I got a really good deal on my 01 Z 6 speed with just 75k miles but it only came with a engine key and keyless entry.

I need 2 door keys since I dont have one and a copy of my engine key.

Do I have any other choice other than getting raped at the dealership?

BTW: I live in Orange County, CA.

Thanks a lot !

one door key must be had at the dealership, because you don't have one to copy. the other one can just be copyed.

the engine key CAN be bought on ebay, as a blank, but you have to find the exact resistance of the key, then match that to the one on ebay.

You can google a car locksmith in your area. Most all of them travel to you, and cut keys and even make new ones if you're missing them. They can do keys that need to be programmed, keys with chips, keyless remote programming, etc.

Thanks.

How do I go about finding the exact resistance of the key?

Find someone with HPTuners or CATS and have them tune the VATS out of it, then you can use a non-chipped key for the ignition

I paid 40 something bucks for a new door key and ignition key for my Z28 from the dealer. Unless by Z you mean Z06, not sure. I don't see it being that much more expensive..

+100

Bypass VATS (vehicle anti theft system) because it has gone bad on EVERY single fbody ever made and Will go bad on yours too.

After the bypass you will be able to use a copy key you got cut for $2 at homedepot. VATS does nothing to protect your car but does complicate your life at oddest times.

I had to get another key made for my car when I first got it, so I went to the dealership, thinking I was gonna get raped too, but the key was only ~$10 and ~$5 to cut it if I remember right. I was confused why it was so cheap, thinking that the black thing on the key was a chip that needed to be programmed. The old guy at the parts counter told me it was just a wire that connected both sides of the key so if someone shoved a screwdriver in the ignition it wouldn't start because it needed the wire to complete a circuit.

Now I'm not saying this is true, I really have no idea, but I was just happy it was so cheap!

It's just a resistor. But I believe the door keys are just the normal ones like used in the t-tops without the VATS?

It hasn't gone bad on any of the 5 I've owned.

I also have owned 5, Gf has owned 2.. Not a single problem. Along with none of my buddies.. I'd say an easy 20 fbodys between us all In my close group, not one issue.

Well its a common problem on any car with a VATS system so not just F bodys. The small wires to the ignition cylinder key reader like to break from the turning of the key & cause a no start. Replacing the ignition cylinder or wiring in the proper resistor will get the car up & running again. Thats usually all that goes wrong with the VATS system. I had it happen on mine last summer.

I know it is a problem... But to say it WILL go bad is kind of silly.

We have just came up with 25 between me and rpm that had zero problems. I would say that is enough to say it isn't common enough to tell someone that it is going to happened one day regardless.

I agree.

Eventually everything that sees any sort of friction on any car WILL go bad, if you use it long enough. I don't see this as something that's highly prone to premature failure though.

What flintwrench said about the VATS wires breaking in the lock cylinder is exactly how they go bad. I've had 2 go bad and ended up replacing the lock cyl and attached loom.

Me too. Had the VATS act up on my Denali for the 2nd time back in March. Was stuck out in the rain until I was able to get to a dealership and get it taken care of. Needless to say the VATS is tuned out now.

it took until 198,000 miles on the inlaws 94 buick lesabre, but the vats went bad on it. so i guess it is extremely prone to going bad. then the tranny went out around 210,000. so I guess all gm fwd transmissions and vats systems are extremely prone to going out. damn them. why cant everything last forever and never wear out.

Denalis dont have VATS, either PK3 wihch is a transponder type immobilizer or Passlock sensor.
