Default Engine ids

I don't get it,why does everyone use the engine id( lm7,l92, ls3 ,etc).instead of displacement? I mean when you talk about sbc you don't say,l48,dz,lt1 etc,you say 400,350,327,302 ,just curious.

Because of he same dispacement can have sveral ids. Example: 6.0 can be lq4, lq9, ly6,or ls2. Some aluminum bocks, some iron, different heads.

^Fishface is right.

Same engines are very different even though they have the same displacement. Such as the LS3 and L92
