Default Bad coil packs/wires?

A weekend or so ago i drove the car to town to help my brother unload some furniture (about a 20 minute trip) and was pulling out on to the 4 lane highway and had a small gap so i took it and accelerated hard. As i was slowing down the car backfired and blew a flame out of the tail pipes. Again. So i did my thing and when i got home, before i put the car in the garage i got a timing light out and put it on number 1,3,5 and 7 cylinder. I held the trigger and watched the light. At idle number 7 had a slight skip, but when i revved it up to around 2k the light stopped flashing. Let it idle down and it started flashing again. Switched to number 5. Same thing. Switched to number 3. Not quite as bad. Switched to 1 and it didn't skip or shut off at all. Haven't put it on the other bank yet. But my question is, can you USE a timing light to check your "spark" on these motors? Im going to swap out plugs and move coil packs around and see what happens.
