Default Diference between LS motors and Vortec??

New to this whole site and concept, but I am a believer. I would love to get a hold of a LS but $$ aren't there. Have been looking into getting a 5.3 or 6.0 and making it happen from there. Can anyone tell me the basic difference between the LS motors and the Vortecs??

Thanks

Those are LS family engines as well. They just aren't designated LSx. In fact, you'll find that many people on this forum are using 5.3 heads on their LS1's. And TONS of builds begin with the 6.0L (LQ4/LQ9) engines. So If your looking to build up a engine, the LQ4 is a good place to start. Major difference in LQ4 vs. LS1/6/2/7 is block construction. The LS motors are aluminum block and heads, whereas the LQ uses a sturdy iron block for truck use. Hope its a start!

Good luck!

Wait, so you want to sell your 454 or the whole car? I'm all about new muscle over old muscle, but if your car is the one in your 'sig I'd say keep it-that's a special kind of muscle car right there...

I'm with myk. I think the world of the LS engines...you can make huge power with great gas mileage, limited weight, and small overall dimension, but.....there is nothing like turning over the key on a big block. For your original post, the vortec motors where essentially gen 1 small blocks with revised heads (still iron block, iron heads, compared to all aluminum for most LSXs)

They were talking about Gen 3/4 vortec, not the older stuff.

No way I'd swap a big block for an LS and I currently own 2 LS cars and one big block car. For what it's worth I am usually disappointed when I see a muscle car at a show with a newer engine swap.

Put the money into a stroked crank and better heads for that big block.
