K&N to Fram=Lost 3 mpg

K&N to Fram=Lost 3 mpg Ok I fell for all the talk in that big thread about the k&n and got a Fram.
The reason is I moved from FL to TX. I had the filter about 2 1/2 years and it still looks brand new. Now living in TX is a whole different story, theres a lot of fine dust here so I put a Fram in and drove from FL to TX again and averaged 22 mpg with similiar driving style, speed, temperature, cargo weight, etc.
First trip was 25 mpg.
These both seem kind of low IMO, the car has a 6 speed and 3.73's, long tube headers, ORY, AIR delete.
I have HPTuners and leaned out PE with a wideband a while ago and with the k-n.
Could a filter have caused this?
FWIW when it was bone stock with the A4 and 3.23's it ran consistant 13.6 in the 1/4 mile. I took the stock filter out, ran with nothing and went 13.2.

something else has got to be up.
i can't imagine a 12% change in mileage with just a filter swap.
could easily be just the age of the car....fuel filter, plugs, fluids, tires
A4 w/ 373s and 25mpg seems about right....22mpg seems low.

Tires should be about the same wear and pressure. No way to tell what quality fuel I was getting.
One trip from FL to TX the car was actually 9 lbs over loaded, the door sticker says max cargo= 701 lbs, I actually weighed everything I had in the car (a big block chevy) and it still got 25 mpg.
Come to think of it though I did change the knock sensors and harness, and I added a home depot catch can (modified to not cause a vacuum leak).
I don't really think the filter could cause that mpg difference, I never thought removing the stock filter would lower the ET either. Doesn't K-N say it increases mileage?

It's got an M6 with 3.73's.
It can't be age? the first trip and second trip were two months apart and the car wasn't my DD so it only gained about 100 miles between trips.

did you go from a fuel with little or no ethanol to a 10% mix? if so that would have dropped it by that much. remember each state make's it's own rules of what fuel addatives are required. I noticed a considable drop when pa went to a 10% mix.

lol I would deff like to see a pic of that too. But on topic, I can't imagine a filter being the culprit for such a drastic change in MPG's.

essentially fram filters (oil) are made of cardboard which is known to break down and trun to a glue like compound. basically Fram knows that you cannot trace a blown engine to just the fliter so they acknowledge this as well as many other flaws with the product and continue to produce poor quality filters.
because of that, i will not purchase that brand.
if you search the internet or ask around you can get more specifics.. but that's it in a nutshell.
use WIX, PureOne, NapaGold or K&N if you want a good filter.

i have a fram and iam happy wiht my results too. lol jp man this is all preference, some people think just cause it says k&N on it that its so much better than everythign else, fact of the matter is, this war has been going on since these brands first came around and IMO its all personal preference

Yes, I've heard and read about the Fram oil filters, but we're talking about air filters here.

I took the passenger seat out and put the block there, heads and a muncie M21 on the back seat with it folded down and the pass seat on top of that, pan, valve covers, timing cover, carb, dist, misc in the back. I didn't get the whole engine, left the crank, rods, and intake because it was resting on one bumpstop already.

seems to me like you should have been getting better than 25mpg to begin with
when i went to colorado this summer, i averaged 27-28 on the highway, and it looks like we have the same mods
