power steering?

why do they put a power steering cooler on the f bodys??

No idea, i had mine taken off when we did H/C thinking it was leaking into my power steering pump, haven't really noticed anything. Turns out it probably wasn't the cooler that was causing the trouble, i think i just have a bad rack. But either way, i don't notice anything negative after taking it off.

because of the way the pump is mounted, the fluid in the pumps on our cars tend to boil pretty fast! it wont take much to get the tempurature up on it! just take a look at the color of the fluid! looks like shit!!! i installed a derale power steering cooler on my car! helped my pump alot! now my fluid does not change color! smoother steering, and it does not make noise any more!

when you track your car you will know y

i track my car, drag racing doesn't seem to affect it at all ;)

yea just see how many times you can parallel park b4 the pump starts sounding like ass

I had a real bad PS leak I just fixed. After about 15 minutes of driving, pop the cap on your reservoir. The fluid is so hot it looks like colored water in there. Mine would barely leak if I let it idle. But if I drove for a while it started pissing out like a garden hose. After seeing that, I decided to put a cooler on it when I get a chance.

How did you fix the leak?

It was a bad seal on the top rack return line (metal one). I went round and round with the dealership and finally had to order a new line that came with the seal. It fixed the leak but I think it sucked a good 2 years of life out of my pump.

Another piece of advice. Don't try doing donuts with the steering wheel at lock. I have seen a few people's pumps go out just from the high rpms+locked steering.

Dave 96TA 03-04-2008 12:37 PM

Interesting. My rack is leaking from the top input shaft and the driver's side inner tie rod.

i used a derale transmission fram rail cooler! it works great and the mounting spot under the radiator makes it look almost factory, also yea when the steering wheel is turned all the way lock to lock that is at its highest pressure point! when you turn the steering wheel all the way you can actually see the power steering rubber lines moving around from the heavy pressure

FMX05 03-04-2008 10:57 PM

I read somewhere that the PS line pressure on the LS1 cars is ~2000psi...
