What to expect out of a gear change??
I have a 2002 Z-28 all stock with the exception of a lid. A4 tranny.
I ran 13.5 1/4 mile 60' of 2.0 @104 mph I have 2:73 gears and get 28-30 mpg out on the highway and 22-25 in town.
So here is my question: If I changed to a 3:42 gear how bad would it hurt my mpg and how much would it help my 1/4 mile time? Is it worth the change?

yes i agree with 1996firebirdformula. a gear swap from 2.73s to 3.42s will give you a pretty good gain, but if you really want to see performance out of your car i recommend 3.73s. i went from 3.42s to 3.73s and i saw a big difference. gas mileage shouldn't drop that much as long as you keep your foot out of it.

You even said you searched and couldn't find anything, so maybe you shouldn't be advising him to go look himself.

I went from 2.73 to 3.42 to 3.73 and now I'm considering 4.10s with an A4. I'm wondering what the RPMS would be at 70 MPH with 4.10s because I very seldom go over 70 mph. My RPMS at 70 mph with 3.73s are about 2500rpms.
If you go with 3.42 you will always wonder what it would be like to have 3.73s and there is a noticeable seat of the pants difference between the two.

hello, in 2004 i think in super chevy an article "ls1 dos and donts" they reccommended 3:73's for an A4. i'm conservative so i will go with 3:42's. pm me with a fax number and i'll fax you the article. just my 2 cents.

I went from 3.08 to 3.42 and it made a huge difference in the butt meter, but no noticeable difference on highway mileage. I was averaging 19-23 before and 19-23 now (all highway).
Anything deeper than 3.73 would **** me off for sure (shifting too early at light throttle through intersections and such), first gear is over quick enough as is and that's where the 700r4/4l60e really shines anyway to me. 3.42 or 3.55 would be ideal for a street car that sees highway use.
