Exclamation SIR coil

I need to change out the SIR coil for one with steering wheel radio control wiring in addition to the airbag wiring. What is the proper procedure and steps for doing this?

Anyone?? All I know is... Disconnect the battery, pull the airbag fuses, remove the knee panel under the column, remove the steering wheel... What next? Am I missing anything so far?

Not much else. It is hard to fish the wiring out of the column. You will enjoy.

After you pull the steering where there is a snap ring holding the coil in place. Then you pry it out. There should be a wavy copper washer under that.

Then you should be able to fish the wiring out. If you need to you might have to remove the locking ring. I can't remember if you need the remove it for space concerns.

Removing the locking ring makes it a little bit harder.

How do I remove it so that it doesn't turn during/after removal? Tape?? What's involved in removing the locking ring... A nut?

Sorry for all these questions...

All is good. GM designed a little clip on the back so that it can't be turned when you remove it. The clip is held down when you install the CW

To remove the locking plate you have to buy a 10 dollar removal tool which compresses the bearing preload spring. You would see a small ring exposed by a couple of mm. Spread that ring and snake it up the upper column shaft.

I found a pic. I didnt' take this one but I have plenty of pics I have taken of the column. For I have suffered to obtain this knowledge.

it looks like there is enough room without removing the locking ring. It would suck to do though without removing it, imo
