Car won't start.
 

I have a 2000 Camaro SS that is giving me problems with starting. When it goes to start, everything will kick on electrical wise, but the car doesn't even click to turn over the engine. It has kicked off on my husband driving down the highway, and the other night I went to start it to make a trip to the store and all of the electrical components kicked on, but no click or anything for the engine to come alive. I am trying to find a diagnosis for the car because if I can't figure out what is causing the problem, I may have to trade it in on another SS and I really am trying to avoid it. I have no idea if it is the security system or if it is something completely off the wall. If I could get any help, it would be greatly appreciated. :D

If it was VATS you should be getting a security light. Also could be the battery/battery terminals - I've had them die and have some voltage left, but not enough to crank the engine. Don't trade it, might be something easy.

it stalled going down the highway? first i would check for power at the starter when cranking. if there is power, its a bad starter. no power, problem elsewhere. check the cable connections as well.

We tried the battery, it wasn't that. We tried to jump it at a friend's house with their expedition and it still just didn't turn over the engine.

With no security light I'd still check the battery/terminals first. If you don't have a digital meter to check the voltage I'd pull it out and have it load tested at a parts store, most places will check it for free. If nothing else it'll eliminate the battery as the problem.

if everything lights up, the battery should be ok. take a hammer to the starter or check the voltage there. sounds like a starter.

Haha, I would love to hit it with a hammer. Then again, if I start, I might not stop. Now the more and more we think about it, it would probably be the starter. Thanks.

no problem just hitting the starter with a hammer usually frees it enough to turn over. of coarse you need someone cranking.

If it won't start with a jump you probably have a bad battery cable to the starter or bad connection there.

^^^ not necessarily, my starter was bad and the car couldn't be jumped if you take a hammer to the starter it usually frees it up like someone else stated... if it's a six speed you can also push start it like i did till i fixed the starter... as for shutting off on the freeway that doesn't happen with a bad starter, as far as i'm aware of... it could be a ground somewhere but first check the starter

No, but a bad positive battery cable could.
