Default Valvoline says Mobil 1 does not meet specs

Valvoline asserted that because its tests show Mobil 1 5W-30 does not meet basic API SM or ILSAC GF-4 specifications, “that means Mobil 1 5W-30 cannot meet basic GM, Ford, Chrysler or Honda specifications.”

I use GC, so I have no dog in this fight, just found it interesting, thought others might too.

These test get amusing at times and I bet Mobil has a test somewhere that shows Valvoline won't protect your kids tricycle.

They're just going along with what many of us have discovered over the years... Mobil 1 isn't cutting it anymore.

I know this is going to get a bunch of controversy, but what does everybody recommend? I have still been using Mobil 1 in my wife's T/A. Just curious to what, and WHY should I change?

Thanks,
Joe

Used oil analysis in my LS1 produced good wear numbers with Havoline DS 5w-30 (the thinnest conventional oil easily available), which were approximately equivalent to the numers received with GC, which were better overall than the old M1 5w-40 Truck & SUV oil.

M1 has slightly higher iron numbers than most other oils, but over at BITOG users of M1 produce other wear numbers of a normal range.

I'd say it's just a pissing match.

think with your dipstick jimmy !

a classic example of a commercial with no factual evidence, just emotion and ridicule/humor to entice you into buying their product.

german castrol is a bunch of bullshit, like the blackstone random number generator is conclusive proof that it is better oil when you submit the sample and tell them LS1 and castrol 0w30 oil.

I would like to know if I should use something else other than Mobil 1 (used 5w30 Mobil 1 for almost as long as I owned the car).

What does everyone think about Castrol EDGE (they claim 8x better wear protection than Mobil 1).

I just read a UOA on a diesel sprinter van with Mobil 1 0W40 that had 40,000 miles on the oil and it still had a decent TBN-it did have some top offs when the filter canister was changed. I'm skeptical of some of the claims regarding M1 being made by competitors. When API drops Mobil 1 then I'd be concerned.

i've ran M1 in every vehicle i own and havent had a problem at all i swear by the stuff. the TA has 118 thousand w/ o an issue to date (knock on wood). I also have a 95 GMC sierra w/ 330 thousand miles on it and still run like the day i bought it. Been Mobil 1 since day 1 and i dont plan on changing anytime soon. i run both blends 5w30 in the winter and 10w30 in the summer

well I personally use mobil 1 but dont you all find it a tab bit weird that all the oil commercials are comparing there product to Mobil 1. What I think is that since its the oldest and most high end cars especially GM's Z06 use mobil 1 i think its o.k. for me in my stock ls1. I had a buick G.N. high dollar motor and used AMZOIL and it still blew up its all about your filter and how you drive it. I still use different filters AC Delco,Fram, K&N all a numbers selling game.

I doubt you are going to see any problems with any oil in a daily driver with bolt ons. i use GC 0w-30 in my 02 Z28 without any problems, but I also used dino oil in my 1990 RS, passed it down to my younger brother that ran it into the ground and probably never changed the oil, sold it to his friend, and it is still running strong at 235K miles, original engine.

One problem I see with every oil thread on this entire website is that everyone just lists what they use and they don't back it up with any data. "I use GC, the motor hasn't broken yet..." "I use M1, no broken motor here either..." Nobody cares if the motor hasn't broken yet. I could use dino Shell and could easily say "no problems here".

The truth is that an oil analysis is the proof that shows the quality of oil, and GC has consistently shown to be a better oil. It has shown to be one of the best oils, if not the best, analyzed in a LS1. If you don't believe me, go search through some posts by Patman. He is the oil guru.

MB1 0-40 is good oil. My Tests came back equivalant to Castrol 0-30. With better dertergants, and is probly thinner equaling less resistance.

I was just trying to give an unbiased input but it is so nice to hear somebody talk about tests instead of the usual "it hasn't broken my motor yet" speech.
