Default drove through water now car is overcharging

drove through a 2 or 3 inch deep puddle then all the lights on the dash lit up and the volt gauge is pegged at max. i immediately shut the car off. this was approx. 24 hrs ago. went out this morning and its still pegged at idle. did i fry the voltage regulator? is thats whats causing the overcharge or do i need to look at something else?

also is there supposed to be some kind of shield under the alternator to protect it from this kind of thing? if there is, mine doesnt have it...

This is the problem of having the alternator located at the bottom of the car. There is no shield to block it either.

Sounds like you shorted out the voltage regulator. Unfortunately, the alternator has an internal voltage regular and you will need to replace the entire thing.

Wait...."LS1Fury" may certainly be correct, you could have damaged the voltage regulator.

But let me tell you one thing. I clean my engine bay every 4-5 months. I spray the entire thing down real good with a hose, BUT CAREFULLY too. Each and every time for the past 11+ years, after I spray the engine down to rinse it off, for 1-2 days I also have a an over voltage....as in the needle pegged to the right. All I do is turn my headlights on and keep my A/C on full blast....I also have a 1,000 watt stereo amp......All that stuff being on will bring the voltage down if needed to a safe area. After 1-2 days, it dries out and its perfect again for 4-5 months. It just needs to dry out.

Try turning those things on and go for a drive. After a couple days, maybe even 2-3 days it should dry out.
