Go easy guys okay. I changed the oil today used wix filter and mobil1 10w30. Made sure all the oil was out etc jacked the front of the car to get underneath it, also jacked up the back end to get it level and waited for the dripping to stop. So last time I changed it I used damn near 6 quarts and the dipstick showed the oil over the arrow. So this time I put in 5 and 2/3 quarts and got to about the same level. Just wondering how much you guys put in the car, mine has sat for an hour and the oil is just over the back end of the arrow (operating range). It probably is not that accurate but I want to make sure I have not put to much in.
That's what I did last time but looking at the dipstick the oil was always above the operating level, where is your at?
I have my dipstick segmented with lines that I put into my dipstick with a file. I have a 3.5 line, 4, 5, 5.5. So when I pour all 6 qrts in it really never gets above the 5.5 mark....because some of the oil always sticks to everything in the engine. There's no way on earth 100% of the oil can make it back down to the pan. But I know there's 6 qrts in there. There's absolutely nothing wrong with putting 6 qrts of oil into a stock LS1 oil pan.
But like "fleetmgr" said, start it up so the oil filter gets filled up. But you'll have to wait a good 15 minutes to get an accurate reading. If you do it after its up to operating temp, you can wait just a minute or so and then check it and it'll be pretty damn accurate.
I always fill my new oil filter to the top with new oil before I screw it on.
Old oil filter gasket.....its permanently attached to the oil filter
.
sometimes it gets stuck to the pan, you dont realize it so you put the new filter on. you have just double gasketed. it usually results in oil everywhere since the filter doesnt seal properly
and to the op, the general rule of thumb is 5.5 qts with the short filter, 6 with the longer one
Thank you for that info I asked the guy at the parts place if they had any bigger oil filters he looked at me like. Are you speaking for your lt-1 or is this for both?

i think there is a bigger filter used on the LQ blocks, not sure about the part number. but for my LT1 there is the standard filter and then the truck filter which is twice as long

Never heard of that. I always put wet oil on the gasket before I put it on...ain't no way that sucker will stick when I take it off. I also only leave them on for 3,000 miles, and for me, thats about 2 months of driving.
