The rack on my 00 SS has a small leak, what do you guys do when the steering rack has developed a prob? can it just be repaired or just replace the whole rack?

I used to work for a rack rebuilder. It depends what you are doing with the car. The Lucas PS treatment will cure small leaks by swelling up the seals.

Of course the leak will eventually get bigger. It depends how long you are keeping the car. More than a year, replace the rack. Less, you might get lucky with the snake oil. I'm not to big an additives. I would be afraid they might actually damage the pump and hoses.

Betcha if you just change the fluid it will stop leaking. Just buy a good brand like Valvoline etc. Mine did the same thing at 36k miles....after changing the fluid it never leaked again.

Not sure how a fluid change could cure a leak unless the fluid has some special properties. Might be worth a try.

I also have a minor leak. My strategy is to keep fluid up until I can deal with it properly.

formua87: If you change the fluid and the leak stops, let us know what you used.
