Misfire at idle and PO442
Alright. My gas tank has been leaking horrendously since I bought the car. I've never thrown a code before though. On the way home tonight, the cel came on. I stopped at autozone and they pulled a po442. I figured it was my leaking gas tank at the filler cap. Tried erasing code when I got home by pulling PCM BAT fuse. No luck. Light still on. So I disconnected the negative battery cable. Still no luck. So I disconnected both battery cables. Negative first. STILL NO LUCK! Its got to be something else. I thought evap solenoid. I have a spare sitting around. A little different part number but looks the exact same. No luck. What else could it be? Also, while sitting in park, the engine jerks back and forth. I know its misfiring although it doesn't throw a code for that. I do have a cam in it but it did this before the cam and its been tuned. If you listen to the tailpipes and put your hand up to them, you can hear something that sounds like straight air and it feels almost cool coming out sometimes. Sorry for all the problems but they are driving me nuts. I was going to replace gas tank with one from a 93 but I was told the tank wouldn't work. Can someone tell me why? I was going to use my pump and sending unit. Would this still not work? Thanks.

How long did you leave the neg cable off? It needs to be off for a little while to clear the code. When you took it to autozone, did they clear the code and it came right back?
Not sure why a 93 tank wont work, but I would want one from the same year anyway b/c I think some in these cars were metal and some were plastic, or so ive read.

'98 right? You need to pull two fuses, try this to clear the light:
Turn key on, don't start car
Pull PCM BATT and PCM IGN fuses
Wait 5-10 min
Turn ignition off
Replace fuses
The idle will be grumpy until it relearns.

I'll give that a shot. I'm pretty sure I pulled them both but I'll try again. Thanks. Any answers on the tank? You know how hard it is to find a tank out of a 98? Really really hard. Thanks again.

I used my dads code reader to erase the code. It hasn't cut back on yet. Hope not. Still need info on the tank. I have to get one and don't want to buy the wrong thing.

Yeah. I know about the plastic tanks. They came in the 99-02 cars. Mine is a 98. It still has a metal tank. Just like the 93-97. So, I'm trying to find out why they won't work.

They do have a different part number. But I don't know if its because they come with the pump and sending unit. I'm not sure about the tanks themselves though. I know the pump and stuff is different.

I would imagine that codes P0442 and P0440 are often mistaken one for another or taken to mean the same thing. P0442 is strictly a minor emissions evap leak, which is near impossible to find without a smoke machine apart from the obvious lines and valves which can be visually inspected. Because of this, you shouldn't go replacing parts that require significant resource until you've conclusively identified the source of the leak. Otherwise, it'd be a hit or miss gamble. Of course, the first thing you want to do is to monitor a recurring report of this code in your computer after tightening the gas cap multiple clicks. If it does come back, check the vapor purge lines and valve on the driver side of the intake manifold, followed by additional relevant parts under the vehicle by the gas tank.
The P0442 code alone won't cause you to fail emissions as long as you complete a single OBD2 drive cycle after a reset. It takes several drive cycles for the P0442 sensor to report.
