Default Whats the deal with this alternator "vent"

So I just pulled my alternator and am ready to put my new one in. Both had this black plastic vent on the back that looks like its supposed to go to something, but it doesn't. Should there be some ducting that connects to the back of the alternator for cooling or something?

Its a duct that directs the air coming out of the alternator. There is an internal fan that pumps air through it to cool things off. The duct is needed so that system works efficiently.
