[Q] heavy duty hitch to pull over 3,000 pounds
 

I am modifying my '98 LS1 transam suspension. One benchmark I want to get to is being able to pull over 3K pounds.

So far I putting in
Bilstein HD shocks, UMI weld-in subframe connectors, and the airlifts

I am looking for a hitch. All the hitches I find on the net are rated for 1K pounds. I need more.

do you guys know who might have those ?

You're probably going to have to get this fabricated due to the car being rated so low from the factory. Because of that, no company in its right mind will offer a hitch of higher stature due to the possibility of a lawsuit. Even with upgrades, 3,000 lb seems way over the limit for safety. Keep in mind, it's not just the shocks and sub-frames to make the trailer weight., although they'll help greatly(if correct). It's also the steering and braking. Good luck, but again, you'll probably have to find a fabricator or something like it.

Closest I see is 2000 max towing with a 200 lb tongue weight. Got that right here at the top of this thread, btw. Just followed the link. You may be able to contact them and get what's advertised... a custom hitch. I still doubt it, but may as well try.

thanks, went to that site, they say dual exhaust will not work... or may be I am misreading. I have hooker exhaust Y-pipe

I have larger drilled, after market front rotors installed. I also do not mind changing the clutch to somethign stronger anyways -- if that's required.

Subframes, shoscks, breaks, clutch -- all these is something that most people on this site modify. I am just looking for suggestions that would let me keep my car without spending 30K or a truck for occasional trailing.

have you looked for a used truck , im sure somebody down there is selling a decent truck under 10,000. rigging a car to tow is looking for trouble or accident to happen. dont do it.

you can get a used truck for well under 10k that'll easily pull 3000 lbs.

Like others have said, its pretty unsafe and maybe asking for frame damage.

Sorry I got nothing useful to say but if you only need to tow occasionally than a rental truck would work too.

"Upgraded" rotors aren't going to do shit to help stop 3000lbs behind the car.

Towing 3000lbs with an f-body isn't just insane, it's dangerously insane to other people on the road who'll get run over when you can't stop. Buy a $1000 beater pickup to haul shit around - you don't need to buy something brand-new to yank trailers up and down the road, or to try and modify a passenger car to tow that much.

I wouldn't try it. My parents tow a 3200 boat with theyre silhouette minivan RATED for 3500lbs, it is a very tough drive for it. I would be more concerned with ins. coverage IF something did happen, as your risk of an accident is huge.

The lack of Hitch availability should tell you something. The car is only specifically engineered for what is in the manual, maybe +/- 500lb all weight combined, your doubling that number.

The towing capacity is so low because the car does not have a full frame. You risk serious damage to the chassis if you try this. I know its not what you want to hear, but for the money you would spend anyways I would go pick up a 1980's ford or chevy half ton for a grand and be done with it, then you could tow twice that you're looking at safely and have a spare ride as well.

BINGO! I can't stress enough how bad an idea this is. Apparantly you don't care about your own safety. Cool, that's your decision. But don't endager me and everyone else on the road cause your to cheap/poor to buy a beater truck or rent a freakin uhaul occasionally. I'm wondering if the '68 was an aftermarket body. Either way, the undercarriage of each of those cars seems to be a GM truck FRAME, etc... Even the Fiat seems to have a well shortened (probably GM) chassis underneath.

I still stand with my 1st response. 3,000 lb seems way too high for safety.
