Default Quick questions concerning my car (3.8 V6 Firebird)

Where is the Idle Air Control Valve?

Can I use Sensors from a 3800 Supercharged? What if I replace the whole throttle body?

Would it be bad to use a tapered air filter instead of the rectangle one?

My car is a 1996 V6 Firebird. Can I get that part

I got a throttle body from a 3.8L Firebird, but the car was automatic. The acceleration mechanism (the one used to accelerate the car from under the hood) is comprised of 2 pieces while my throttle body accelerator part is 3 pieces.

The 3800 supercharged belongs to a Pontiac GTP.

Since its a 96 the idle air control valve is right on the left side of the throttle body. To remove it is only two t15 torx bits I think, it's been a while. As for the sc 3800 parts, no idea.

Wow! Thanks man that helped a lot!

Also, is that your "under the hood" picture?

That's fine, on the 99+ v6 f-bodies it was part of the throttle body I think. As for the pic, yea that's my car.

Wow, how did you get that intake? My intake is always punctured by the brake system.

It is just the K&N intake, but you could use the Slp one, the moroso one, or the Lingenfelter supertube. For the elbow that is just a 1le elbow from a lt1 car.

The later 3.8L's didn't have one because they had drive by wire TB's so there is no need for a valve. It just uses the throttle blade stepper motor.

Yea, it would still work with no issues.

Ah ok, I've never really looked into the 99+ cars, but now I know at least.

i saw a salvaged Camaro with the intake in the middle (the filter was in the middle).

Is that better or worse? It was still a 3.8 but it was automatic. My car is manual.

The auto and manuals from the same year should have the same motor (well except the flywheel vs flexplate if you count that).

When you say the filter was in the middle what do you mean? If you mean that it was in the middle sitting on top of the radiator support then it was from a 98+ car, and it might have a drive by wire TB on it.

Yep, on top of the radiator support man. So the throttle is quite different then?

What about the valves?

The rest of the motor should be the same more or less for all the 3.8L's 96 and up. The major differences were when they switched to a drive by wire throttle body and they also straightened out the intake manifold.

96 and 97 were basically the same

98 - change to airbox on top of radiator. Still has angled intake manifold and cable throttle body

99 - change to straight intake manifold and drive by wire throttle body

00 - tubular exhaust manifolds replace previous style exhaust manifolds.

Mechanically everything else should be interchangeable. Heads, valvetrain, cam, rotating assembly, etc.
