Default Replacing Steering Rack...

My steering rack is leaking and I'm not sure where exactly but I read that I would most likely need to replace the whole thing and not just a gasket or O-ring. I dont have the time or willingness to do it myself right now...

Does anyone have an idea of how much this sort of thing might cost? The part is about $300 but I'm curious about what a mechanic might charge for labor...

Any help would be great! Thanks!

Do it yourself - shouldnt take more than two hours in your driveway on jackstands

Two hard lines, a nut at the end of each tie rod, and two bolts/nuts is all that holds it on. Oh, and the steering shaft.

Yeah but that's a problem right now. My driveway is dirt and gravel at the moment since I'm getting a new one poured soon. If it would only take me a couple hours, it couldnt cost too much for my mechanic to do it...

Its that bullshit labor book that they go by though.........almost every mechanic on earth can beat all those times. But they charge you anyway.

FWIW, I will be selling my power steering assembly very soon. Everything still works perfectly and it is being replaced for performance reasons only. Parts from a 02 Trans am auto.

I'd say its like 2 hours of labor plus setting toe. Its a very easy procedure but you gotta bleed it right and check the alignment. Should just be a toe set. At our shop we use Alldata as a guide and its not all that generous. Sometimes we add time if its an older car because things like electrical and suspension can be a major PITA, especially considering the way people take car of and maintain their cars.

I got a rebuilt rack from Rack Doctor, just checked their site price $120 http://shop.rackdoctor.net/2000-2002...995-3570-C.htm
You will probably want to do tie rod ends at the same time, then you need to decide Chinese or Moog.
Two hours is not realistic, I probably spent that much time cussing at the drivers side bolt before I decided to lift the engine.
