Uh oh. (videos)

So my car is in storage after this: Whoops :gtfo:

So I took a trip out and decided to start it up and run it up to operating temp since it hasn't been ran in awhile.

What the heck is this sound?

Whenever it makes the tap/click/knock/whatever my oil pressure goes crazy.

Disregard the two loud buzzes I was getting a text message :burn:

Sending unit?

WS.SIX 09-04-2012 11:44 PM

Sending unit might be a little shaky but it only started doing the real bad sweeps when the tapping began.

LS1121 09-04-2012 11:53 PM

I agree sending unit is bad or shorting but....... you have other issues, maybe a bent valve. From your video it sounds like the motor is breaking up under throttle. Pull the valve cover and check the rockers, pushrods look to see if one or more is dry. Could be many things but start with the valve covers off.

WS.SIX 09-04-2012 11:58 PM

Pulled the valve cover before I put her away (was making basically the same noise) and everything looked perfect. No loose rockers or nothing out of alignment, springs all looked good. I poured in some marvel mystery oil and it got quiet but the sound resumed afterwards. I was thinking something lifter/cam related from research but I don't have the resources at the moment to pull the heads off just to check and see.

Edit: Also every once and awhile there is a metal to metal squeak for a fraction of a second. Totally random in when it does it. Usually at idle though it won't do it off idle.

FiredUpZ28 09-05-2012 08:09 AM

Sending unit or connection. Double check it at the sending unit. Possibly the cluster going bad but dont see too many of those.

WS.SIX 09-05-2012 11:39 AM

I'll replace the sending unit, that's fine and dandy. What about the loud tick sound that accompanies the oil pressure drop/spike?

LS1121 09-05-2012 11:56 AM

How is your fuel pressure?

tvg001 09-05-2012 12:09 PM

can you hear the tapping from underneath the car it could be a lifter

WS.SIX 09-05-2012 02:41 PM

Don't have a fuel pressure gauge so I'm not sure about that part but it will pull WOT up to redline. The tapping sounds the same from the top or the bottom.

FiredUpZ28 09-05-2012 02:54 PM

Maybe cam or lifter noise. Honestly I hear so many LS1s that sound like sewing machines I dont even bat an eye anymore unless its super loud.

WS.SIX 09-05-2012 04:26 PM

While im here at work I was listening and timing my car at idle the amount of clicks are roughly 5 to 6 per second.

My car is an auto so idle is about 600rpm (stock longblock) so that means 10 crank revs per second. A camshaft turns one full rotation every time the crank turns twice. That gives me 5 cam rotations every second.. which matches the sound I hear.

Crap :bomb:

Since everything looks okay on the top end it has to be cam/lifter.

From the random metal to metal squeak every once and awhile im guessing massive lifter issues (collapsed, seized, rotated, etc) which probably wiped the cam :bomb:

If I am going to pull the engine apart I don't want to put it back together stock.

The vehicle is mainly used for fun so while a wild cam wouldn't be totally out of the question I want something a bit more mild so I don't have to replace springs every 10-15k.

Build List:

- Lunati linkbar lifters

- Comp Cams chromemoly pushrods

- GM Hotcam kit w/ ls6 springs

- Rocker trunion upgrade

- LS2 timing chain

- LS6 oil pump

- miscellaneous bolts gaskets and fluids

Anything im missing? I realize some parts are overkill for the application but keep in mind I am looking for longevity. :burn:

bump!

1_MEANZ28 09-10-2012 12:37 PM

Good luck with the feature mods!

FBGSU02 09-10-2012 01:25 PM

Why the hotcam and not a 228 cam? just wondering

BudRacing 09-10-2012 02:11 PM

I'd step it up to a better cam and dual springs. I would not suggest LS6 springs for anything other than stock.

WS.SIX 09-10-2012 06:43 PM

Looking for longevity. I am not a fan of valve springs becoming a maintenance item with as high as my motor sits on solid mounts.

WS.SIX 09-10-2012 06:46 PM

"Better" is relative Bud. For me hotcam or maybe an ASA is the best possible scenario for what I want out of this motor right now. LS6 springs are well rated to handle the lift of a hotcam or asa cam and still last 100,000 miles.

BudRacing 09-10-2012 10:03 PM

I totally get it. But if I were going through the expense and hassle, I'd go for a little more lift.
Hot Cam specs 219/228@.50 .525/.525 lift 112 LSA
Ls6 Cam specs 204/218@.50 .550/.550 lift 117.5 LSA
LS1-GT1 Cam specs 218/229@.050 .561/.561 lift 113 LSA

I just think the hot cam leave a little to be desired in terms of lift. Even the LS6 cam has more.

WS.SIX 09-10-2012 10:56 PM

It's just a cruiser and mountain road carver it might see strip one of these days just to see what happens but otherwise its a street machine. One day i'll go bigger but its going to be atleast a 454 at the very minimum.

I realize the lift is lower than the 02+ version of the ls6 cam that just means less stress on the springs which is great in my book. I'll probably end up going with the ASA over the Hotcam due to the 110 LSA. Might be a touch harder to tune but if need be i'll just go SD if there is too much reversion.

Also I already have a stall in the vehicle that would work perfectly with it and I don't want to have to change out a stall that has only 4,000 miles of usage on it.:jest:

Everything is a compromise and I'm willing to compromise a little bit of power for longevity. It can always be made elsewhere. I was thinking of a ATI underdrive pulley since the stock one has to come off anyway :burn:
