Question Lost Door Key

When I bought my car ('99) the guy only had the ignition key. What are my options? Can I get keys made off my VIN? I would be comfortable replacing lock cylinders if I could find them! I can only find the trunk cylinder online. Help with that would be awesome. Is it true I can take a cylinder to a locksmith and they can make a key for it?

On a side note, the interior trunk release button doesn't work, any insight there?

A locksmith could probably make a set of keys. It would cost a lot more money money to replace key cylinders; especially if you have a t-top car too.

Should be able to take the Vin number and proof of ownership to your local GM dealer and have a key made. It shouldn't cost that much cause the door key doesn't have a chip installed in it like a ignition key.

Assuming you find a dealership that still has the blanks and the computer system had the info put in properly from the start. I had this done and went out to the car only to find it didn't work ANY of the locks. I ended up buying a set of lock cylinders off ebay from the seller "wolfsecurityhardware" that was a "kit" of both door lock cylinders and the trunk lock cylinder, just looked and it's currently selling for 55 bucks (I paid 50) and just swapped them all out, so I have door keys but can't "lock" the t-tops or glove box, which is still a step up from where I was with no door key.

FYI the doors are so easy to do you will spend more time taking the door panel off then actually swapping the cylinder.

My house was broke into a couple years ago and keys stolen! Lucky for me I stored the car elsewhere. Took my title to the local dealership and they cut me new keys. Worked great. Only issue I had was the original ignition cylinder was swapped so I had to buy a new ignition cylinder and blank key. Dealership told me which key to buy so I get the right resistor.

That's also assuming your locks had never been changed.

Take your title, drivers license and go to the GM dealer
They can cut it by code for pretty cheap since its not a chip key
You just have to prove you own the vehicle

I had a t-top in my old Camaro fly off on the freeway once, so yes, I always keep them locked now.

I honestly don't understand how a t-top "flying off" could be prevented by locking it, the lock only keeps the latch from being opened, if you t-top could come off while latched it could come off while locked, unless your latch just flaps around around on you.

As the mechanisms get older, they get sloppy. Locking them keeps the latch mechanisms closed and secure
Hit a few bumps with a worn out, unlocked latch and it can come loose...
