Default '99 Z28 - Power Steering Rack Going Bad?

So I just installed a new power steering pump on my '99 Z28 LS1 M6. But my question is about the power steering rack & pinion. I have replaced the original power steering rack due to the seals going bad and fluid leaking out. My question is "other than fluid leaking from it, what are the signs of it going bad?"

Would I hear a lot of squealing coming from it? Can it go bad without any fluid leaking out? Is there any chance that it could have a catastrophic failure at speed without any warning signs? Shudders during a low speed turn?

I'm just curious.

Thanks

If you replaced it with a reman, it could be a bad reman where the company used parts that were worn too far.

I'm not sure if anyone makes a new one, but I see that RockAuto has several to choose from in their catalog.

Mine isn't bad at this point; it drives fine. My question was about the symptoms of a rack and pinion going bad. Is there any telltale sound, does the steering shimmy or does it just stop working?

When mine goes, I think I will send it to TurnOne to get rebuilt like I did for my pump. They probably have the parts to nearly make a brand new one!

I would do the same (I need one NOW), except that I cannot afford the downtime (or the car rental) since this is my ONLY ride, so I'm going to have to get one of the Delco remans.

I called my Pontiac dealer today..Sheehan Pontiac in Pompano Bch, FL., they have brand new GM Rack and Pinion units with both tie ends..........Part # 26062311

$700.00

Or just go to rockauto.com and get an AC Delco remanned unit for $156.00 (old core required).

Or call any local parts store and use Part #36-0012

BUT....there are slightly different units so you need to know which unit your car needs by reference to your VIN. So call your dealer and get the proper part number for your car.

Whenever I buy a reman, I worry that the core will be something off a scrapped car from a junkyard, fresh off a demolition derby.

I much prefer to take the bus for a few days and spend the extra money to know that the core coming back to me is mine. Although, I sometimes buy a reman part and keep the original so I can have it rebuilt the next time around as a spare.

Good idea. Actually, I'll probably go ahead and buy the AC Delco remanned unit from rockauto.com...which does come with a warranty. Then send mine to TurnOne and just put it on the shelf....since I plan to keep my car for a long time. Then no down time either....
