Default belt wont stay on balancer.

I have a 2007 gmc sierra 1500 and I have been through 3 belts. it seems that when I set everything up right and then I turn the engine over it moves ever so slightly forward on the balancer. one of the ribs of the belt was ripped off and now it seems to be sitting fine. I feel like it may be the water pump pulley. what is the best way to find the problem?

Check the pulley alignment with a straightedge.

Look closely at the belt tensioner. It is easy when you are removing a serpentine belt to use too much force to release the belt. Socket on the end of a breaker bar or ratchet and you have a lot of leverage and now you have bent the tensioner out of alignment. Easy to pull too hard.

I know, I have done the same thing. Slightly bent and now the belt will not ride flat and straight. Might need to replace the tensioner but it should be no big deal or expense.

The other pulleys are not likely to have been damaged or suddenly came out of line. Tensioner is probably just a little tweeked.

I have already replaced the tensioner. from what I can tell it seems to move forward on the water pump pulley when I turn the engine over. but I cant tell if the pulley is uneven or not.
