Default WS6 making a rattling noise when it's in Drive , But ........

WS6 making a rattling noise when it's in Drive , But it stops rattling as soon as I put it in Neutral

For some reason , my WS6 ( Only when i am at a stoplight ...... when the car is in Drive and I have my foot on the brake ) , it starts making a Rattling / chugging type sound ( in a way , it sounds a bit like it has a Cam on it , but it doesn't

As soon as I put the car in Neutral ( when at a stoplight for example and I have my foot on the brake ) ........ When I do this , the rattling / chug type sound immediately quits

Can someone please help with diagnosing what this sound could be coming from

Also:
the sound ( rattle / chug noise ) gets louder if I have the AC on , but again , when i put the car in Neutral ( even with the AC running ) the sound quits

Thank so much for the help

Does it go away when the car is moving and you aren't on the brake?

Hi wssix99 ,
Thank you for replying

Yeah , as soon as i give it gas and start to move , it instantly goes away

Same thing with when I am stopped ( at say a red light ) and I put the car in Neutral ........ It immediately goes away

Only when the car is running / is in Drive / I have my foot on the brake , does it make that Rattling type sound

Thank you again for your time and your help

This is a classic sign of a failing torque converter on the transmission.

wssix99 ,

Thank you for diagnosing the problem for me

It has been making this noise for 4+ years now , and the Transmission still seems strong

What is an Average cost to have the Torque convertrr replaced ?

And would you recommend I look at having anything else replaced/looked at , to help avoid more costly repairs down the road ( trying to keep my Transmission from going out )

Thank you again for your time and your help

This is a normal part that wears out. It takes the place of a clutch on a manual transmission car.

Nothing to worry about here.

How many miles do you have on the car? Are you over 150K?

As far as cost, etc. you might post in the Automatic Transmission section. Folks there will know more about these things and can give you some good advice as to how to go about it. (My advice is going to be to rip out your transmission and convert the car to a manual!)

I don't know. lol But there are lots of people here who have done the conversion and would know.

I recall that the T56 transmissions are REALLY hard to come by these days in good condition.

You should be able to get the Torque Converter replaced for way under $1000. The most expensive part should be the labor because the transmission needs to be dropped to get to the part.

BTW - 150K miles is about when you might start seeing torque converter issues.
