Default Ticking sound from under valve cover

2001 ws6 m6 47,000 miles,

Upon reving engine while in neutral, actually I think I hear the noise while driving as well, I hear a metallic clicking sound coming from what seems like under the passenger side valve cover. I took it to my buddies shop class and the teacher said he thought it might be the lifters. Just wondering what you guys thought and if anyone had similar problems?

Thanks a bunch,

Doug

Also, check for a bent pushrod. I do not know if you owned the car from new, but if the previous owner missed a shift at some point a pushrod could have been bent.

There is a known problem with rocker arms losing the
needle bearings (you can find them in the oil pan) as
well. Pull the cover and see what you find, none of it
is especially good but also not especially difficult to
deal with. I'd say bad lifter is a distant third in likelihood.

Well I have missed 2nd to 3rd more times then I like to remember, but I have never did a 3rd to 2th shift when shooting for 4th. Anyhow I have a warranty on the car so I will take it in. Has anyone ever been turned away with a extended warranty because of missing shifts and messing stuff up, not sure if that caused the problem. I also have this shudder problem happening randomly as I drive...hope this is connected and can be fixed as well. Let me know guys,

Thanks,

Doug

p.s. that was so good replys thanks really

Good luck to you. Had the same thing on my 98 and it drove me apeshit. We replaced lifters first (which apparently needed it because three of them had collapsed). Didn't help. Moved on to replacing valve springs, retainers, and push rods (did find two that were sightly bent but not bad enough to be causing the chaos that was going on.) The sound seemed quieter, but was still there after this fix. I was on my way to replacing the rockers when some bitch smashed into the back of me, so I never solved the mystery. If you do a search here, apparently, it's common on these cars. I think I was the victim of piston slap and I would have chased it all the way to the top of the motor before I finally fixed it. Considered doing a cam swap while we were already down there in the lifters, but I'm glad I didn't since the Old Blind Bat Bitch did me in only 4 months after the lifters were replaced.

The items I did replace, we went back with stock. The more I learn about these cars, the more I wish I had gone with stronger internals, like double or triple valve springs. But then again, I guess if I had strentghened one component, I would have had to go whole hog.

Hope you find your problem soon and I hope you don's have to chase it as long as some of us have in the past. Good luck...

Btw, here is the TSB about the needle bearings

Needle Bearings Found In Oil Pan (Replace Rocker Arms) #02-06-01-029

1998-2002 Chevrolet Camaro, Corvette
1998-2002 Pontiac Firebird
2002 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade EXT
1999-2002 Chevrolet Silverado
2000-2002 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe
2002 Chevrolet Avalanche
1999-2002 GMC Sierra
2000-2002 GMC Yukon, Yukon XL
2003 HUMMER H2
with 4.8L, 5.3L, 5.7L or 6.0L V8 Engine (VINs V, T, G, S, U -- RPOs LR4, LM7, LS1, LS6, LQ4, LQ9)

Condition

Some customers may comment or technicians may notice needle bearings being found during an engine oil change. The bearings may be found in either the drain pan used or on the magnetic oil pan drain plug.

Cause

One or more rocker arms may have experienced a bearing failure.

Correction

1. Inspect all of the rocker arms for bearing retainer cap failure. If one or more defective rocker arms are found, replace all 16 rocker arms.
2. If no condition with the rocker arms is found, refer to the service history for previous rocker arm repair. If previous rocker arm repair was made, then the engine may not have been thoroughly cleaned of loose roller bearings. If no previous rocker arm repair was made, then look for another condition.
3. Remove the oil pan and clean out any additional bearings found within the oil pan.
4. Install the oil pan.

Parts Information

Code:
Part Number	Description Qty
10214664	Rocker Arm 16
12560696	Gasket - Rocker Arm Cover	2
12558760	Gasket - Oil Pan 1
