I'm Running too hot.... My LT-1 gets really hot in stop and go traffic (~225°F). It's been like this for a few years and I want to run cooler. I replaced the water pump, thermostat (180°F), and flushed the system and refilled with 50/50 green stuff. At speeds above 50mph, it sits right around 180°F so it seems the thermostat is doing the job... In stop and go, it climbs slowly to about 225. But if I run the A/C, it forces the fans to turn on and the temp is just above 210°F. Even ~210° is a little unconfortable for me. The dealer tells me that they only sell 180° stats for the 95 LT-1. I thought about using a 195°F stat (like in the LS-1) so the coolant would have more time to cool off in the radiator but I know its not designed for that. Maybe the fans aren't sharp enough or spinning fast enough. I wish I could remember what it did when it was brand new, but I don't ever remember being worried about the temperature. Anybody got any ideas? |
The LS1 'stat is called a 180 and its actual pivot is about 194F. The "160" ones pivot about 177F. Your car probably has a similarly stupid set of fan on/off temperature settings, but I don't know what tools are available for tuning your model year. I'd look to TunerCat first off, see what-all is involved (hopefully not having to crack open the PCM case but if you gotta, you gotta). Other alternative is a manual fan switch or a thermostatic fan controller. |
