car doesn't start

My car was working fine all day. I got some gas, went back to my house and an hour later i tried to go to the store and my car wouldn't start. It doesn't turn over or crank or anything. It makes no noise at all. It's not the battery because my headlights, radio, and windows work. I took off the starter and took it to pep boys and they said it was fine. It was running at like 9V and it got pretty hot when the guy was testing it. It also started to smoke a little, but he said since he got a voltage reading from the starter, the car should make some kind of noise when i tried starting it. Any ideas what is wrong? I notice when i try to start my car, the security light flashes. I don't ever really pay attention to my dash so i'm not sure if it normally flashes when trying to start the car. Thanks

What year is your TA?
If you have more than one key, try another key. Supposedly, there is something inside the key for security. Maybe its not making a good connection. Also, try hitting the remote unlock before turning the ignition... Kinda strange that everything else works... Have you checked all of your fuses? If you have a voltmeter, check to see if you are getting a potential voltage at the starter. :chug:

check your wires running to your starter from the alt..and so on....i had a 89 chevy blazer and did the same thing to me. it turned out to be that i had 2 wires touching because the wires were burned. check than and your security chip in your key.

It could be a faulty or semi-faulty Neutral Safety Switch. Is your car and auto or M6? My mother-in-laws Ford Ranger was having the same intermitent problem. Turned out to be a sticky neutral safety (manual Transmission).

Hope this helps.

Definitely check your key before you do anything else. It has a chip that gives ohm readings specific for your car. If the key is worn, YOU WILL NOT START AND GET THE SECURITY LIGHT. No big deal, go to dealer -- get new one. Then try. Let us know.

I saw this in another forum and thought it might help....

Daily driven since 11/17/2000 when I left the Dealership with 3 miles on it, currently 67K miles, only thing to go bad was 2 batteries. Other than that, nothings even gone wrong except today I couldn't start it due to a bad sensor in my key. Waited 10 mins for the security light to go out, started right up.

Raced with close to 400 passes on it at the track, it's modified and has never broken a thing racing. It's been maintained well and it's too much enjoyment on and off the track to worry about gas mileage.

well yesterday the car finally started i never had the security light on. I did two things i disconected the baterie, and i messed around with the wires that go to the starter, since i knew one of them was loose before, well both wires were conected to the started so i dont think that did anything. I reconected the baterie and bam car starts right up. i guess i'll look more into it this weekend weird, good luck with ur car man.
