Default Damn oil filter

I got the car about 6 months ago and am finally changing the oil, well the dealership put the damn oil filter on so tight it won't budge. What the hell can I use to get this friggin' thing off, things like this are the reason I don't like working on my own car :end rant:

You could go to Autozone and get an "oil filter wrench" which is basically a strap you can tighten. It looks like this:

Or if all else fails, after you have drained the oil from the pan you could pierce the filter on the side with a screwdriver and try to twist (for more torque than your hands can apply). Be warned though that will make a little bit of a mess

I work at a shop and I have to say everytime i've done a car that had an oil change from a dealership, the filter is 99% of the time put on rediculously tight, but try an oil filter wrench.

screw driver is the easiest way, i dont even try other methods anymore. you could pierce the filter and drain the oil out of it, and then use the screw driver to twist it off, less mess.

They make the socket for the oil filter and if that doesn't work stab a screwdriver through it. That is what I had to do to get one off. Not much room to work there with the oil pan. Good luck.

Hmm, I may try the screwdriver thing first, if all else fails I'll go buy the damn filter wrench.

go to walmart. they make a plastic cup that fits the oil filter like a socket and you use a socket to twist it off. I would be careful with a screwdriver because if you twist the filter in half you will be in a load of trouble.

Damn, Twort you nailed it on the head with that post. I had to go to Napa and buy the cup to fit the oil filter, except this one was metal, and voila it came off. So a 30 minute oil change turned into about 2 hours. But now at least I got the right tools for next time, thanks guys.

Yes, because don't forget that most of the oil is in the pan, which sits below the filter. When you remove the oil filter without draining the pan, you'll still only lose a little bit of oil, just the same amount as when the pan is empty.

wow. i've never had to resort to a tool to remove the filter on a LSX engine, little hard to get a good hand on, but it'll come off if you have strong hands...don't forget to add the 14 quarts of oil to your car...most people make the mistake of not putting enough in...

I have worked with a few people before that thought if they didn't bust a hernia taking a filter off, it wasn't on tight enough.
