HELP!! Car wont start

So I got out of work about an hour ago and got in my car and it wouldnt start. There was no power at all. I had driven it earlier in the day and it was fine. I could hear the starter trying to turn but nothing was firing. Then it progressively got worse to the point of absolutely NO power going through the vehicle. I tried to jump it, but that did nothing. There is still no power and I had to leave my baby at work tonight. I think Im gonna cry.

Alternator?

wamp42 Mar 13, 2006 10:20 PM

I think thats what it may be. why would it just decide to quit all of the sudden?

No it was fine up until tonight after work. Power was fine. Just when I originally tried to start it up, some dash lights came on and I heard the starter but after letting time pass and numerous attempts to start it it got so bad that now NO light come on and there is absolutely NO power in the car. This was after I hooked the battery up to my buddys car and tried to start it. I let his run connected to mine for 5 minutes and it had NO affect at all. So the power going into the battery is not being used by the car. or something im not very car savvy. but the battery has to be good so Im guessing its the alternator.

how are the volts looking when u turn the key to the on position?

Just to make the sure the batt is not completely drained, use a voltmeter on it. If any thing reads, then you havnt drained your batt dead. If so, replace it? If there is a reading, maybe check the terminals, any corrosion?

I just got a new battery a month ago. When I try to turn the key it goes a little bit up then all the way down.

Take the battery and alternator to AZ, see if they both are good. Then look for any corroded wires or blown fuses. Sort of the same thing when I was selling my car, the battery would just drain so fast, alternator was good, we found one blown fuse and a wire that melted the insulation. Put the battery and alternator back on, and somehow it was good... Dunno if I was much help but thats my experience.

I got it jumped and it runs really rough. That may just be the fact that it is cold outside and it was sitting out overnight in the open. It let it warm up but it dies when I try to move it. There isnt enough power to run the car or the battery is drained and the alternator isnt recharging it so it dies. It also was running a little hot which baffles me because the coolant is full. Just seems likea whole wierd frustrating experience to me.

What's the voltage across the battery with it running? If it isn't at least high 13s or low 14s replace the alt.
