what's hydrolock?

what does it mean when people say you "Hydro-Lock" your engine?
I used seafoam.

spy2520 Jun 19, 2006 06:41 PM

hydro-lock is when your car sucks alot of water in through the intake and self destructs. thats what i always thought it was.

even if you stalled the motor with seafoam it should still start back up, although it might be hard to intially get it to restart.

It doesn't mean that your engine is toast right?
My seafoam procedure was done wrong. When i took the hose outta the driver side the car stalled on me. I had a friend who started the car and held the RPM at over 2000 and i let it suck through the bottle. I put about half a can of seafoam through the hose. Very little smoke came out and now i'm thinking of putting it in the crankcase.

hydralocked is not ideal for an engine.

bigpappasz28 Jun 19, 2006 07:25 PM

its when the cylinder gets full of water and will not compress wich causes youre motor to lock or sometimes break a rod and block because water does not compress

it sure doesnt lol. and i doubt you could possibly hydrolock your motor with seafoam unless you drove it into a seafoam lake...

Lol, no joke.

Let see if my calculations are correct, seafoam is not as dense as water so it will compress more than water would.....Elementary my dear watson!

word, but it was always my understanding that "liquids" dont compress, not just water, regardless of density...

That's correct. And it takes as little as 2-3 ounces of liquid to hydrolock a cylinder on your LS1 or any other average gasoline engine.

How can you tell if it is hydrolocked? Will it happen instantly or does it take time?

Pull a spark plug and you can see if it is soaked in fuel, water, seafoam.

you can't compress water so with the piston going up and the valves closed the piston goes up but hits the water instead of the air it wants to compress and usually and you bend rods

Alpha-Q Jun 19, 2006 10:34 PM

Mine starts right away. I took it for a good rip opened her up and came home parked it. 3/4 hrs later it started.

SHINER Jun 19, 2006 11:09 PM

i wouldnt try to start it unless u have money for security. Might end up throwing a rod, or bending valvestems or pushrods.

Alpha-Q Jun 19, 2006 11:22 PM

So what do i do then? How long should i not start it for?

2002_Z28_Six_Speed Jun 20, 2006 12:28 AM

Yes, water is NEARLY incompressible. It will compress but very marginally. It will F your motor up.

Seafoam should not hydrolock your motor because the motor is sucking in a mixture of air and liquid. It is not like you are just filling the cylinder then trying to start.

If you think you have fluid in your chambers that wont compress, do this:

Take out all the plugs, setting the wires off tothe side where they will not arc to anything.

Put the key in the ignition and crank the car, not all the way over, but the starter should turn the flywheel which will push the pistons up forcing the liquid out the plug hole.

At least thats what we used to do on my 4x4 when we would get it stuck in the lake. There may be a better way to deactivate the iginition system, but the point is take out the plugs, a make damn sure the ignition won't arc and then slowly turn the engine over.

Hydrolocking is when you suck in water through your intake/filter and it gets into the chamber and with the valves closed and the piston going up the water dosent compress and the piston has no were to go and it bents/snaps your rod.
Kids at my school bust a nut over going off road and they fly 30mph through puddles so big they should be called small lakes and wonder why there angine wont turn over anymore :-\
