Oil capacity of LT1 with long oil filter
What is the real oil capacity of an LT1 with the long filter? I remember when I had my 95TA and ran the PF35L filter, I needed about 5.25qts after a change to show full on the dipstick. But with my current LT1 I need to add 5.6qts! Is that too much? Is my dipstick reading wrong? Can you slightly overfill the LT1 with oil like you can with the LS1, or is there less leeway there?

I have found that when using the longer filter I only need to add maybe a 1/4 quart more than the stock filter though. It really isn't a lot bigger, just maybe an inch. So maybe I should be running 5.25 instead, no matter what the dipstick says?

To add more confusion, my owner's manual says 4.5 qts, while other LT1 owners say theirs is 5.0. It seems to vary from one year to the next, even though they made no changes to the oil pan. I guess I'll never really know what amount of oil I should be running. I don't want to put in too much so that I'm losing power. But I don't want to run too little either.

Any more replies? Nobody changes their own oil?

Re: Oil capacity of LT1 with long oil filter
Funny thing is, I've always needed 5 quarts for mine to show full, and even with my stock motor, (running the PF35[L] from day 1) I still only required 5 quarts to get right to the full mark.
Now, with an entirely different engine, block and all, and with a Canton RR pan (they claim 1 additional quart in the sump), I now need exactly 6 quarts to read full. Yet, a friend just put a Canton pan on his motor, and needs nearly 7 quarts to read full, and that's using the PF25 size filter.
Bottom line, I think there's a lot of variance.
