Default Jacking Question

I'm removing my tranny this week. With the rear of the car supported with jacks at the subframe connectors and the rear wheels removed, once I start lowering the rear the rear axle just keeps falling. How far does it go before it stops? The only thing holding the rear in place would be the shocks/springs/sway bar, and once the torque arm is removed, does it fall more? Is this safe to just let it hang - is something going to break with torque arm removed? Oh, and I'm just going to leave the engine unsupported while removing the tranny. Thanks!

Ok, I called Kwiklift, and the guy said most just let the rear hang unsupported with no wheels (like a brake job), so I guess it’ll be ok and I’m just being paranoid.

As far as the torque arm, I guess the fact that the rear continues to sag while being connected to the tranny via the torque arm means there isn't much vertical support there anyway, so removal shouldn't drop the rear even more.

the shocks will hold the rearend up and the lower control arms and panhard bar and sway bar will keep it in place. The rearend will rotate in place a bit (TA keeps the pinion angle in check) but it won't go anywhere. Just take the wheels off the back to relieve some stress on the shocks since they will carry the load. If you are worried about it put a jack or blocks of wood or somehitng under the rearend to help suport the weight.

Thanks for the reply. The deal with the kwiklift is that the car is way off the ground, and I don't have anything available to support the rear that goes that high. I'll just let it hang though. Thx!
