Default Changing tire without key wrench

I did a search for "key wrench," "lock nut," "lug nuts," and "changing tire," but after looking through the first three pages on all, I couldn't find the answer to this question, though I'm sure it's been covered on here before.

I don't have my key wrench that came with the car. So, how am I going to change this damn tire?! I have like no tools. Hammer on a smaller socket?

I just know this thing never kept a wheel theif from taking a wheel, but it's hampered damn near 25% or more of the owners.

I know, I'm a complete newb.

The hammer on the small socket was going to be my suggestion. I hate those damn wheel locks.

take it to a tire shop. they have a special tool that snap on will only sell you if you are ASE certified. it can break off wheel locks in a snap. they can do it, probly for free too.

usually a 19mm impact socket and a hammer will do it, i recommend craftsman lol...

I didn't have mine either..... i used a smaller socket, a hammer, and an electric impact, and then replaced it with a regular lug nut

couldn't be happier

Check the spare tire area or your user manual material and see if the previous owner left the wheel lock replacement card. It has a serial number on it and instructions on who to contact to get a key.

A hammer and a 19mm it is. Hell, with the Superbowl going like it is, I'm just going to go out and change it now.

Great news! All I had was a 17mm, so I had to try to hammer some standard on there. Got it hammered on, but it just turned like it was made out of pot metal. So, no I've got a stripped key nut, no key, and a car that I paid to tow to my house that I can't do anything with.

Oh wait. That's ******* shitty news.

Yeah, most tire shops will have the kit mentioned before. We do it at my shop for a small fee. They are tapered sockets that have a spiral pattern on the inside. You hammer them on and then hit them with an impact. Takes all of 5 minutes, but it is kind of a pain. The reason is after every one you take off with this method you have to take the socket over to a vice and bang the lug nut out of it. Techs hate doing it and we flag them .5 tenths for the trouble.

that would be by far your best bet...

I guess that would be the easiest way, but I can't drive my car. The wheel is bent and the tire is torn up. I'm going to call my body shop right now and see what they advise.

I rounded my lock with the socket trick and then had to chizzel some sides back on to get a smaller socket on. Lucky for me it worked.

hehe thats shitty luck, i do it all the time at work but it probably only works with an impact gun, i see how a breaker bar could round it pretty easy...

Apparently, it's going to take a bigger hammer or a bigger guy, because with a normal hammer I could not get that 19mm over that lock nut. You're at a bad angle to begin with. I bet if I had a heavier hammer I could do more damage, but I don't know. Gah, I don't want to have to pay to have it towed again!

dont tow it, call a auto shop and ask to borrow the correct tool... my dad loans his out to people as long as the leave a deposit...

heck I have taken it and an impact gun with a 2 gallon air tank to peoples houses before for less money then a tow would cost...

I just ran into that problem myself a few days ago. Go to NAPA they have a reverse thread socket that threads itself onto the lug and starts turning it when it bottoms out. Its used for stripped lugs as well. They cost ~$15, they are reusable, and come in a set of two 13/16 and 1". They worked great to get the key lugs off my 2001 SS. I dont have the packaging but my receipt says that it is NAPA Part #M980.
