Default A.I.R. pump noises? 1998 A4 T/A

In normal operation it comes on maybe shortly after start-up momentarily and sounds like a high-pitched whistle.

Just wondering if anybody had any issues with the A.I.R. pump/related hardware and funny noises. What noises were heard?

How loud is it? Still have AIR and can't hear mine cycle unless the hood is open and listening for it.

It's normal to hear the pump a little after startup. It should just sound like a fan blowing though, not a high pitch whistle.

The high pitch whine can also be the Idle Air Control valve letting bypass air into the intake to aid in start up.

Usually you hear the AIR pump make a "whoosh" sound when it cycles.

My air pump is pretty high pitched, sounds like a supercharger spinning up when I first start my car

Too bad it isn't

There is something different about the '98 AIR pumps. I notice that people with the '98s always tend to notice how loud the AIR pump is vs the people with newer LS1s. I can tell you, I've had a '99 and '00 LS1 as well, and for some reason my '98 pump is noticeably louder than the others were. That was one of the first things I noticed different about the '98 when I bought it.

I'm sure it's fine. It's sounded the same for the 2+ years I've owned it.

I had both of mine replaced and haven't had any problems since then... definately something different about the pumps used in 1998.

Is the new one still as loud as the old one? Was the noise the reason you replaced it?

I never assumed that there was anything wrong just because it was a bit louder, just figured it was a different design.

The new ones are MUCH quieter and I did replace them because of the noise. I could've simply removed them but prefer to keep my car as close to original as possible. I suppose in the purist sense that would mean my AIR pumps *should* whine like crazy? Haha.

I've noticed that you keep refering to the AIR pump as plural. How did you have two pumps on one car? Or was it two cars?

Mine isn't really that loud. But it is louder than my '99 and '00 were. Those you could barely hear.

Mine makes the same sound (I think) on my 02. It's a fluctuating whistle. It only seems to happen on start up at home. It never happens anywhere else. It's pretty strange. The only difference is me parking on a very slight incline at home. Passenger side is a tad lower than the driver.

Giving the car gas makes it go away until I let off, and after a short time it goes away.

It's the number one reason why mine is sitting on a shelf in my garage. My car is a 2000, by the way.
