6 Speed acting like it's an automatic???

Not sure if this is the right section to post this... but...

just like the title says... I'll be driving down the freeway doing about 65-70 mph at about 1500 RPM's in 6th gear and if I floor it the RPM's quickly jump up to about 2500 for a few seconds and then go back down to around the 1500 area....

It's almost as if I had an automatic, and punched the gas enough for it to downshift to make the RPM's jump higher... it's really odd...

no codes are being thrown so far...

the car does have a little over 112k miles on it... I'm wondering if a clogged catalytic converter could cause something like this? At least i'm hoping that would be the answer and not something major...

would this be a rear-end issue? except I don't hear any noise coming from my stock rear (of course you can't hear much over my Loudmouth exhaust...)

I have noticed a ticking exhaust leak sound just come up recentley... but haven't located the source yet...

I'm supposed to be getting long tubes and y-pipe somewhat soon, so i'm hoping that solves the problem... but i'm not even sure what the problem is so...

any feedback would be great! Thanks guys/gals

Clutch is slipping.

I agree with the guy above. It happened to me as well, due to my slave cylinder sticking and not fully engaging the pressure plate. The dang clutch pedal would stick to the floor sometimes! I fixed it by putting in a Z06 Clutch/Flywheel/Pressure Plate and Z06 Slave Cylinder.

Sounds like a slipping clutch. Time for a new one... Oh, and wrong section :P

Hell no... i've heard so many bad things about Spec....

I would hate to think that my Clutchmasters Stg. III gave out on my after only 3 years of use on a basically stock (as far as performance goes) car.... Not to mention just found my reciept for it the other day and between the clutch, aluminum flywheel, and master cylinder it was a little over $1,400.00

Soul TKR Apr 23, 2007 11:41 AM

P.S. that was my 4th clutch wtf...

How long a clutch will last is a very subjective Q and A.. you will get a lot of answers... but it all comes down to how you drive. Done any burn outs lately ? hard down shifting ? Double clutching on takeoff? Are there a lot of hills in your area ?

IMO, also with a light Weight Alum Flywheel.. it will cause you to rev higher or slip the clutch more that you would with a heavy flywheel on take off. It does rev quicker once you get it in gear and moving. This will shorten the life of a clutch as will your driving habits.

well the problem seems conclusive in 2 other forums... so looks like it is indeed a clutch problem

Ericbigmac83 Apr 23, 2007 11:59 AM

Yea, thats what the car does when the clutch starts to slip. definitely clutch, spec 3+ is good

PowerShift408 Apr 23, 2007 12:34 PM

Yea, kiss that clutch goodbye. Mine did the same over an even shorter period of time.

Sneakyws6 Apr 23, 2007 03:52 PM

If I had to replace it I would go with the Ls7 clutch kit. I have one in my 2001 Formula and it works great with no issues and is a heck of alot cheaper than what you paid before.

I think they are around the $500 range, even if you change the flywheel over to a alum or lighter one since the LS7 setup is about 10 pounds heavier than the LS6 setup you are still under $800.

xturboguyx2001 Apr 23, 2007 04:32 PM

yes it sounds like the clutch. i have the spec 3 with the drill mod to the hydraulic line. its sweet. make sure you us a new master & slave. stock master is good tu use but make sure you get the newer slave i think it is 02 & up.

xturboguyx2001 Apr 23, 2007 04:34 PM

i also used the ls-7 flywheel & slave now that i think about it

xturboguyx2001 Apr 23, 2007 04:38 PM

oh yeh! i wouldnt try to pull hard in 6th gear. it will smoke a marginal clutch every time. if you have alot of power you could hurt some thing. the ratio is just to high for anything but fuel economy. i wont even try to pull in 5th unless i am doing 135mph or better.
