Question for A4 owners regarding drivetrain noise
Now that I've quieted my exhaust a bit I can actually hear the drivetrain
I notice that in first gear when going from a stop at slow speeds accelerating I get some drivetrain noise. Once it shifts to second it pretty much disappears. Seems to be more noticable when it's hot and tooling around parking lots. It is similar to the noise Jap cars make when backing up and you can hear the gears. It's not as noisy as that, just similar to the sound I'm referring to with my car.
Is it possible that it has to do with the 3.23 rear end ratio as opposed to something lower? I know I've read about major noise with 4.10's. This seems to be more transmission related noise since it quiets down after shifting to second.

I've got a 99 Z28 A4 and it doesnt whine or make any gear "whirring" type noises at all. I've also got the stock 2.73 junk gears in it, and they run quiet as well. I would check into it in more detail. Good luck to you.

Nah no clunking or grinding. Just gear type noise I guess as speed gets higher until it shifts into 2nd. I thought originally it was probably from the rear diff but it shouldn't have a noticable change after shifting gears if that was the case. Hopefully it's just a typical sound with auto's and solid rear axles. Maybe it's not though.
I've had more experience driving jap turbo cars with manual trannys in the past and not as much with muscle cars.

My Z used to do it, but only when cold. Went away after I installed a TransGo SK. Don't know if it was the SK, or the fact that the factory plate had a check ball stuck half way thru it (replaced with a TransGo plate). Either way, it's gone, as is an annoying delay in take off whenever I pulled away from a stop.

I know exactly what noise your talking about. My'n does the same thing. When i'm first taking off i can hear a slight whine..and as soon as it shifts to second it stops..i think it may be related to a planetary gearset or something in the trans...
