Default Lookie What I Got Yesterday :)

18 quarts of GC 0W-30 (and a napa gold filter, only the best )

for all those interested: autozone is running a sale on ALL castrol oils until June 27. that means for another 10 days, you can scoop up GC 0W-30 for $4.49 a quart (all castrol syntec is on sale for $4.49/qt). i bought 17 quarts (i had 1 sitting at home) for $79 after tax! that means i'm good for the next 15,000 miles with oil - easily another year. by then, i'll surely be able to find castrol syntec on sale at autozone once again, so i'll just go there and raid their stash again.

as a point of reference: i went to buy GC 0W-30 2 weeks ago, but the autozone closest to me only had 4 quarts, so i bought mobil 1 5W-40 (i was running that now, but i was disappointed in it). i decided to take a ride to a different autozone yesterday, and they had exactly 18 quarts of GC on the shelf - there may have been more in the back, i didn't ask. the row was full. i brought back the mobil 1 5W-40, got my $37.xx back and put it toward the GC. basically, i got an extra oil change for free, all with a much better oil. stock up while you can!

i changed my oil today, and what do you know: 5 more psi of oil pressure at idle (i have about 45-50 psi idling - damn) and my engine is MUCH quieter now that i got that mobil 1 out of there. i'll never put anything but GC in my car again. i don't care if autozone stops carrying it. as long as i can get it online, i'll buy it.

i drove ~50 miles round trip. it's been nice lately. gear up for a nice cruise.

or you could try ordering it at the counter. see if you can order a few cases at the sale price.

Looks like you scored a few of the old green formula.

don't think so...i opened 6 of them today and they were all gold. i didn't check the numbers, so there COULD be some green in there, but i've bought a few dozen quarts of GC in my life and i've NEVER seen green. i have no idea what it looks like (and don't say "it looks green" )

I only say that because a few of the bottles don't have that newer "European Formula" bs on them.

And it looks green Kinda like thick ethylene glycol antifreeze.

normal GC doesn't have "european formula" on them. european formula is different. it's all gold, it's just 2 different kinds of oils. the additives are probably a little different, i don't know. i can just tell you that some of the new oil is "european formula" and some isn't.

I have yet to find true GC anywhere locally. I'm about tempted to give up and switch to redline, amsoil or royal purple which ironically I can find locally.

you can always get it from ws6store for $39.99 a case. a little high, but not horrible for the best oil out there IMO.

http://www.ws6project.com/user_stor/...dd41436c73906b

only downside is it's $9.99 shipping so you're paying $49.98 a case...

So the ones that say "european formula" on them aren't as good? I thought that was all there was.

My understanding is "European Formula"= German Castrol. The stuff without the "european formula" on the bottle is not GC.

nope. both the "european formula" and regular castrol 0W-30 are made in germany. none of them are made in america. there's just two different formulas of GC 0W-30 out there. i have no idea which one is better. i can just tell you that i've run them both and they've all been great.

"european formula" does NOT mean it's made in germany. you can get regular GC 0W-30 that's made in the USA, and i suspect you can do the same with the "european formula". it's just important to note that GC comes in both varieties. i'm not aware of the difference.

i'll take a pic of the bottles. they're very different, but they're both great.

don't know. as long as it's "made in germany" and not "made in the USA" you're fine. it doesn't matter if it's "european formula" or not. "made in germany" is all that matters.

maybe patman knows the difference between GC 0W-30 and GC 0W-30 european formula. hopefully he'll chime in.

Is GC 0W-30 as highly reccomended for LT1s as it is for LS1s? I'm thinking about sitching to a synthetic, even though it I lose a quart every 1,300 miles or so (valve seals, I think ).

I just found out this weekend that my local parts store carries the 0w30w Castrol European. I was so happy!

We've got it here a couple hours from you, if you want me to send you some. Not sure it would be any cheaper than WS6store though.

I still have ~60 quarts left of the green stuff that I horded from all the local Autozones a few years ago.

I've resisted the GC bandwagon for quite some time now, but I have also been running the M1 5W-40 and haven't been too happy with it. I read this yesterday and thought, "What the hell...it's worth a shot." I went to AutoZone and picked up 6 quarts and a new filter and changed the oil when I got back home.

OMG what a difference! The engine IMMEDIATELY got a lot quieter and is a LOT smoother. I never imagined that there could be THAT much difference between oils. I've used M1 all my life in different vehicles, but I'll never buy another quart. In fact, I also picked up two quarts of M1 5W-40 for my wife's Chevy Metro, but I think that I'm gonna return them and put GC 0W-30 in the Metro! lol!

Guys, if you're still running M1, give GC a try...believe me, you'll never go back!

BUMP

Just wondering if anyone has any insights into whether this oil works well in LT1s. The engine has about 79k miles, I have been using conventional 5W30, not sure what was used before. It has a little bit of seepage from the front and rear crank seals, and burns some oil, which I believe is due to leaking valve seals, since it has no symptoms of bad compression. Any thoughts?
