Default Metal Shavings on drain plug...M1 0-40 sucks

I put Mobil 1 0W-40 in my car for the first time 3 months ago. I seafoamed my oil system about a week ago and today I changed the oil and found metal shavings on the magnetic drain plug. I admit that i normally don't pay attention to it but this time it kind of jumped out at me...i've never seen my drain plug with metal shavings. I put German Castrol in my engine this time but what could be causing the metal shavings? Is it just M1, the seafoam, or something wearing in my engine?

So you use this oil ONE time, don't even remember what was on the plug before (if anything), just seafoamed the car, and it's automatically the oil's fault???

Nothing wrong with M1 0W40. I have no metal shavings, and this is the oil I use. It always does very well in LS1 oil tests. My guess is your problem lies in something other than the oil you used in the last 3 months.

I check the oil every week and top off as needed. I only had to put in about half a quart thru the 3 months, that's a major improvement over the 5W30 (more than a quart per cycle). As for the possibility of the shavings being on the plug before, I highly doubt that because everytime i change the oil i clean the plug. I have a tendency of dropping the plug in the drain pan so I have to dig for it and it's covered in oil. I drove for under 100 miles with seafoam, i only drive to school and to practice everyday.

Again, I assure you that whatever is going on with your motor it's not because of the M1 0W40 oil. Many of us use it, without any issues at all.

Maybe the seafoam flushed something out. Probably would have happened no matter what oil you were using at that time.

ya i think the seafoam might have something to do with it. I'll check at the next cycle and hope it was just a random one-time thing

I use M1 5W30. i have seafomed my car too. the metal shavings are normal, as long as they are not bigger than pencil shavings. To give you an idea. My wifes STOCK 2002 MUSTANG GT, which she drives pretty normal, when i change her oil, she too has metal shavings.

Dont be worried

I had metal shaving and one day I was driving home and, . clank, clunk, clankity clank da bling bling blow. I had Spun a Bearing. I am the second owner of the car and only put around 5k Miles on her. I was using Mobil 1 and it's been said that Mobil 1's oil thins out badly. I stopped using the Mobil and switched to Royal Purple. TORCHD, Paul said he and his wife swicthed to Royal Purple and said that, "It felt smoother." I have to agree, something about it made it feel smoother and the valvetrain noise was slightly less. The only thing bothering me is that I usually have 40 PSI of pressure at Idle and every now and then it'll drop.

To the original poster: My opinion is that Mobil 1's oil viscosity is a bit thin and maybe attributed to the metal shaving is the motor was spun high with low oil or low oil pressure. Good Luck!

I used Redline 10W30 for several years cause I thought it was the best and was getting metal shavings. I since switched to German Castrol, waiting to see if the shavings stop. Not too worried either way.

usually what I find on the plug is more paste like than anything, they don't really look like shavings, just a gray paste, if they look flaky or like actual pieces, then I'd worry.

I bet you never notice them because 9 out of 10 changes like myself and most others drop the plug into the drain pan and end up searching for it and cleaning it off before really inspecting it.

Just note that when it comes off on the rag, it's just a gray stain on the rag, not actual individual pieces.
