Default Any idea on what a mechanic would charge me to get my spark plugs and wires changed.

I called a guy who worked on my old car and all he said was, "Ugh, those cars are a pain to change the plugs on." and then he said he'd have to get back to me.

I told him I would buy the plugs and wires myself, I was just wondering what kinda labor they would charge. Anyone know a general amount?

You can just call a GM dealership--they'll give you a quote. Note that the price will include parts, because most places won't let you buy the parts yourself.

On an LT1 it is a real pain. If you like yourself, just pay someone to do it.

On an LS1 it's not a piece of cake but it is a whole lot easier. Some plugs on the pass side are easier to get in/out if you lay on your chest across the engine. Left-handed folks might have an easier time.

Labor would be really high, at least $300 I would think. Even as much as PITA plugs and wires are to change, I'd still rather do it myself then pay someone.

I won't touch and LT1 due to being a PITA. I'd swap plugs and wires on an LS1 F-Body for $100 cash. I can swap plugs and wires on a stock LS F-Body in about an hour. Headers complicate a bit and on mine I have to do the rear passenger side from underneath the car, but can still change bolt on car for $100.

DIY

Might be a pain - mine was, the 98 has some evil exhaust manifolds on the V6 - but worth spending some time doing it than paying someone out the nose for it. Besides, gotta get familiar with these cars if you want to do anything to them

I thought the plug change on the LS1 was gonna be a PITA, but then I did it in my driveway and it turned out to be better than I thought. The last two on the pass. side are a pain though.

He got back to me and said he would charge $250 for a spark plug change and to flush all my fluids. I have a bud who might help me with it though, if so I am going to try to get it done myself.

Its a piece of cake to do yourself....IF you have the right tools. I do my passenger side in 20 minutes and my drivers side in about 15 minutes. Gotta have the mini 3 1/2" long ratchet and the 1" extension.

I do my plugs in the comfort of my garage, 6 and 8 require some climbing into the bay and a disconnect of the coil packs, but can be done in an hour if I'm lazy. I'm actually more lazy to go and get the plugs from the store.

I would try to do it yourself. Removing the coil packs will give you a lot more room to work with.

its not that hard to change the plugs but the wires are a bitch i changed them though when i was putting my headers in so it made it a lot easier but for spark plugs the driver side took me about 25 min and the passanger i took off the y pipe which took about 10 min and 4,6,8 are pretty easy but #2 is a bitch you might need to take out the alternator i didnt have too because i got skinny arms but that one alone took me about an hour lol but with 2 people it should go by alot quicker i did it by myself.

Thanks guys, I think I am going to give it a go. I decided to go with this spark and wire pack:

Good? Or should I go with stockers?
