Default A.I.R. Check Valves keep failing

My AIR check valves keep rusting out inside and plugging up (SES light code #P1416). No, I can't rip out my SMOG equipment, I'm in California.
This is a 2002 camaro SS, LS1, daily driver 20mile commute to work each way, not really any super short trips except maybe 10-15 1/4mile passes each year for fun
Any ideas what is causing this? This is the second time it has happened. It seems to last about 3 years then I get the SES light. Last time was in 2005.
Thanks for any ideas

I had to change mine on the passenger side a few years ago, wasn't rusted though, just clogged with carbon deposits.

stefan256 - take the pipe off the manifold (2 bolts) and put it in a vice to unscrew the valve. You should be able to re-use the gasket, and if not they're only a couple bucks for a pkg of 6 at the dealership.

Does this only happen on the passenger side check valve? P1416 is passenger side. Is it rust causing the valve to fail or carbon buildup? Any other codes? If you are getting a ton of carbon in your exhaust I would look for other evidence that the car is running rich.

i had to replace mine because of the carbon buildup in it was cutting its airflow in half creating a huge amount of pressure when you accelerated quickly. It does'nt appear to have been changed and at 99k miles it seems like it shouldnt be that big of a deal i think it was $6 i replaced it and the car is running alot quieter now =) best of all not smelling exhaust fumes anymore.
