Default oil consumtion

i know very little on the topic. but my low oil light has come on twice now. from what i read oil consumption is normal on a ls1 and the low oil light means 2-2.5 quarts low. is this normal oil consumption for an ls1, should i be worried and what could the problem be. any help would be greatly appreciated

I don't think that much oil consumption is normal for any car... if it is, that just seems wrong, there should be no reason to make an engine that normally uses that much oil.

If you're losing 2.5 quarts between oil changes, a catch can is not going to help you. That's some serious failure. Have you been under the car to see if it is leaking from anywhere? Do you notice a lot of excess smoke out of the tailpipe?

I would probably start saving for a nice shortblock.

oh totally not what i wanted to hear.and yes i have checked under the car at first i thought that maybe the oil dipstick was loose after the headers , but its in there tight and no other obvious leaks. i don't notice any smoke or weird smells coming from the exhaust. could it really be that bad the car only has 69000 miles on it.

not a ls1 but my daily driver 95 s10 250,000 miles ( not a typo) was doing the same almost a gallon between oil changes so I switched to thicker oil I forgot what thickness but it was the highest at auto zone, and I haven't had to add oil since, this month I'm gonna switch back to 10w 30 just to see if it'll still burn and maby save on gas?
my 2000 z with 100,000 does not burn any oil and i use 10w30

sorry to bring this thread back from the dead but today my car did the same thing....

i have a 2001 camaro z28 with 72k miles and my "low oil" light came on tonight... its never done it before, so i check the oil and it was below the add oil so i went to autozone and added 2 quarts of penzoil platinum 10 30w, i had before mobil 1 but i wanted to try penzoil platinum anyways...

should i be worried if this happens again? i dont think my car is leaking oil, although its night so i'll get a better look tomorrow morning... but at the gas station 10 minutes ago i looked under and everything seemed fine.... hopefully its nothing major...

My car burns roughly 1 quart of oil every 3-4k miles, and i've only got 46k miles on my car. I have come to believe this is the norm for ls1's. If your burning 2+ quarts in between oil changes tho, id say u got a problem.

Could be worn valve seals. My LT1 goes through about a quart every 1,000-1,300 miles, still runs strong. It will however smoke a little on startup. I plan on changing the valve seals eventually, I'm hoping that will fix it.

Don't trust the LOW OIL light. My LOW OIL light comes one once in a while, then I go to check the level and its enough.
