Default 98 Corolla Ticking When Cold

10-13-11 UPDATE
Problem fixed, see post #16 below.

***************************
ORIGINAL POST
I know this is a toyota but I'm not getting much help at the toyota forums. I just got back from a 200 mile road trip. Now I notice when I start the car it ticks loudly until its fully warmed up, usually after driving for about 10 min. You can't hear it at idle, and can't really hear it at all untill close to 2k rpms and up. Again after its warmed up though you can't hear it even at 2k and up. The cars still runs the same as when I bought it 4000 miles ago. It has 107,000 miles now.

I'm currently doing an auto-rx treatment (1st) and I'm using supertech 10w40 oil. I'm over 1000 miles in.

video update:

It makes the ticking noise even when its warm now. This clip was after a 30 minute drive home. city and hwy.

Lifter to vlave lash. (most likely)

Does it sound like it is comming from the top of the engine?

Or is it a injector tick?

One guy did tell me that I need to get some 5w30 back in there. 10w40 is too thick for this motor. I got out my stethascope listened to the top of the motor and couldn't hear it. When I listened near the bottom I think I could hear it much better.

Could be a knock, not too serious though. My is300 has the same thing pretty much.

5w-30 is best to run in the Yoda's though.

I should also make it clear that the motor does have a sewing machine noise similar to a lot of camaro's. This new tick is emberassingly loud. Even the most untrained ear could hear it from 10 yards away.

Maybe something else is to blame. Try to narrow it down with a stethascope.

Unless its a pulley I'm not sure what else can make that noise. Everything else on the car seems to be functioning properly. Its not overheating and the transmission fluid looks good. This car does have a differential which has to be checked seperate from the tranny, I don't know if that could be a possibility. I have had an idler pulley go bad on my camaro and that made a ticking noise, but it started making noise after the car warmed up, sometimes longer and kept on ticking. Before I change the oil today I will get under the car and listen some more with my stethascope.

Default Update

I took the belt off and the sound its still there. I changed the oil filter also becauset thats whats racommened half way through the clean phase of auto rx. I topped it off with a half quart of 5w20. It for sure sounds louder under the car near the rear of the bay. I listened all over with the stethascope and couldn't narrow it down any further.

Whoa man, you got me.

It sounds funky as hell.

I would really need to see it in person to figure this one out.

But, it kind of sounds like it is external of the engine. . . maybe.

+1. Only thing that sucks is you have to use spacers to adjust the lash on those, and you have to take the lifters out in the process, IIRC. But at least the op can check out the lifters while he's in there.

Also, those motors have horrible problems with the rings and burning oil, so I'd stay away from topping it off with 5/20. At least use 5/30, if not 10/30.

as already said, you need to have the valve lash checked. That usually what it is. Unless its a loose spark plug, or header bolt.

Default timimg chain tensioner

I had old toyota guy tell me that it is the timing chain tensioner. My car makes the same sound. He said the tensioner is hydraulic and they go bad over time. As the engine heats the oil up the tensioner works better and the noise goes away.

I guess I forgot to update this thread. The ticking was coming from a cracked flexplate, and it got much worse before I finally fixed it last summer. I ended up dropping the transmission because there was a leak coming from the bell housing. The center part of the flexplate that bolts to the crank had completely broken away from the outer part that bolts to the torque converter. Since the flexplate was broken it was allowing the torque converter to move out of the trans a little which caused a leak.

The car had a worthless 3 speed transmission so while I was at it I swapped in a 4 speed w/OD along with a new computer and some wiring. It was a lot of work, but I did the whole thing for about $200 parts and labor. Estimates for this kind of swap were in the $2-3K range. The swap has more than paid for itself already since I average 3-5 more mpg with the 4 speed.

Toyota loses a lot of points with me for the simple fact that they put 3 speeds in these cars up untill 2002!
