Harmonic Balancer poll, what's your favorite?

Just wanted opinions. I am thinking of going ATI (as I ran that on my SBF and was happy with it), but wanted to ask you guys what you are running, and how much you paid and where?

That being said, what can I expect to pay for an ATI balancer and from whom?

pwrtrip75 Jan 7, 2009 10:31 PM

stock one works fine for me and its cheap.

MeentSS02 Jan 7, 2009 11:14 PM

I love my ATI Super Damper - I'd expect to pay north of $450 for that one.

I am running a March with no issues but sfter reading several threads in the gen IV section about broken timing chains I think ATI is prolly the best engineered. It is apparently the favored damper among most genIII/IV hardcore racers. Interesting in that the one common factor among several of those in that thread that broke TC's was they were running ASP pulleys:confused:

Thanks guys. Yeah, I know ATI makes a great product. Like I said, I ran one on my last motor I did (the SBF I mentioned above) and when I was dropping parts off at my machine shop, they more or less said "you ARE going to run an ATI balancer, RIGHT" Kind of like, look, you can run another balancer if you want, but we really like the ATI.

As far as the stock one goes. Yeah, maybe for a stock application, or SLIGHTLY modified. But, you start adding power and RPM and relatively speaking, a good balancer is cheap insurance. And since my motor will see 8000 RPM, a stock balancer is not gonna cut it. I guess I should have specified for a modded motor, and not stock one. So, here goes the combo:

414"
12:1
Solid Roller in the 270 @ .050 and high .700 lift range
Ported L92's
Should make 675-700 FWHP rather easily
Gonna hit it with 200+ worth of spray.

Where did you buy yours?

99 Black Bird T/A Jan 8, 2009 09:00 AM

I think the ATI is the best one. That's what my 99 T/A has on it.

There have been several Gen IV engines that broke chains that had the ASP on it. There was thread that discussed it.

With that said my new 383 LS1 stroker has an ASP. I don't recall seeing much if any problems with the ASP on Gen III's. With that said, I wish I had got another ATI for the 383 because I worry about the ASP.

Where are you guys picking up your ATI from? I am pretty new with the LS scene so bear with me.....Isnt the crank pulley made onto the balancer? Isn't there a underdrive ATI balancer? At least, I think I saw one, or thought I did. Im gonna thumb through my Summitt catalog real quick, be right back.......

Gen414 Jan 8, 2009 09:15 AM

OK, there is a March balancer with underdrive pulley on it, part #MCH-4504 and it's like $225.
I also found the ATI Super Damper. It is a Camaro/Firebird OEM diameter with AC Pulley, part # ATI-917242 taht goes for $450+

Now, since I am not running AC, do they make one withOUT this AC pulley on it???

Thanks guys

I've got the ATI on sale this month with your choice of MSD wires or NGK plugs :) and always free shipping.

And I like the ARP bolt

I was checking out your website...I entered "harmonic balancer" in the search button, and came up with nothing?

Just go to the ATI section in the online store, can't miss it. Its listed as a dampner I think.

10% would be fine, but out of curiosity, for the "just in case I may" can you PM me a price on teh 25%?

BIg H Jan 9, 2009 03:31 PM

I am running the BBK dampner on my '98 Camaro. It has been going strong now for about 2 years without incident. I don't hear of too many people running that model so maybe somebody else here will have more input on BBK's part.

Gen414 Jan 9, 2009 03:48 PM

OK guys, thanks for the info. Looks like I am going with the ATI. Thanks 99blancoSS for teh follow ups and info. Pleasure doing business with ya!

Oh yeah, go ahead and get me worked up for teh bolt as well. Forgot about that!

I went through Thunder Racing for the pulley and the ARP bolt...both nice pieces to have on the snout.

FYI - the stock harmonic balancer bolt is a 6-point, 24mm head (IIRC), but the ARP is a 12-point, 27mm head.

cals400ex Jan 9, 2009 05:52 PM

do they not make the ATI in 25% underdrive and keep your AC?
