power sterring deletion question's

please bare with me here as im a noob with ls1's. i have been a mustang guy since i got into this game..

has anyone deleted the power steering by simply looping the lines and keeping the factory rack. we have done this with the fox body's with good success .. this is not a daily driven car and i am well aware of the difficulty at idle turning the wheel, but with the skinnies on the front i think it would be fine, so i am asking from a safety/cheap standpoint here, i have read about people doing the shortbelt mod, but has anyone actually gone further and just kept it that way.. thanks

this is not a perm. fix either just till i get to doing a k member/manual rack setup within the next 6-8 months

I would think it would be fine.

Mine is looped at the rack. I cut the hard lines down by the rack and connected them with a piece of hose. Been like that for well over a year now and no issues

Just put plugs over the nipples on mine

anyone have a belt length and a routing diagram link.. thanks

I've got a 51.5" belt on my car. It's turning a Katech tensioner, water pump, alternator, and a Powerbond UD pulley

52.5 here. Over tensioner, under waterpump, around alternator and crank, then back around tensioner

did you do away with the alt tensioner? and have you had any belt throwing issues, near 6700 rpm

nemss1 Sep 20, 2009 06:10 PM

Yes did away with the alt tensioner. No belt throwing issues

Exact same here just a shorter belt. I haven't had an issue with throwing a belt either and my car has been beyond 8K RPM twice(no rev limiter at the time:emb:), I change gears in my TH350 at 7000 .

So we can make our factories rack and pinions to manual units?
How many of you use the car in the street.
I want to know if it can hold long term of use that way.

Z28/2002 Apr 26, 2011 12:43 PM

I cut the factory metal lines on my rack and looped them. It's been on the street like that since 2008 and I have yet to have an issue. But my car really doesn't see a lot of street miles either

My rack is looped as well. No issues, and I have stock size wheels and tires on the front. Make sure you keep the fronts aired up!!!

You have any picture by chance where you cut the metal lines? What you did where pressure hose and return hose goes?
Thanks

Google "fbody looped power steering" and go find images that make sense. Basically "loop" the upper fittings like a power steering pump bypass. This way the hoses just push fluid from one side of the rack bladder to the other in a closed circuit. Very little psi to worry about but be sure it is sealed or your tires will find hydraulic fluid. Don't be THAT guy that dumps fluid on the track and hits the wall.
